A dazzling novel in the most untraditional fashion, this is the remarkable story of Henry DeTamble, a dashing, adventuresome librarian who travels involuntarily through time, and Clare Abshire, an artist whose life takes a natural sequential course. Henry and Clare's passionate love affair endures across a sea of time and captures the two lovers in an impossibly romantic trap, and it is Audrey Niffenegger's cinematic storytelling that makes the novel's unconventional chronology so vibrantly triumphant.

An enchanting debut and a spellbinding tale of fate and belief in the bonds of love, The Time Traveler's Wife is destined to captivate readers for years to come.

I really liked this book, it was such a great story. I've talked to a couple of people who didn't like it at all, but I was captivated by the story.

I had no idea I could be so immersed in a bestseller, usually far too elitist for my own good, I decided to stop being such a silly little solopsist and have a look-see. Niffenegger (fahrfegnuggen) writes in such idyllic prose that summons its readers almost hypnotically, osmosis or not, this is one fanny-tastic read. i love the whole "THAT 70s book" love the era ( will miss you donna pinciotti) thing ...I am eternally grateful to dietcokemama- by the way love, have you tried A&W diet rootbeer, oh the versimilitude to the real thing, its actually better than that.Shame this will be on the big screen courtesy of the now defunct aniston-pitt buying the rights well perhaps it won't come to fruition how I abhor the screen adaptation, woe woe woe is me.
verily i say unto you....
this will be sent to a California girl this week.

It never rains, but it pours, as they say. I opened up the mailbox today to find not one, but three books waiting for me! One was a trade, but this and another one are rings/rays. Rings and rays always get top billing, so I'll start on this one right away. It's been on my wish list since it came out, so I'm happy to finally receive it.

----dietcokemama's rules and list pasted below, so that I don't have to go looking for it later----

I really enjoyed this book, though as the story progressed and Clare got out of college, I identified less and less with her character. Which isn't to say that there's anything wrong with the writing of her character, as I think both character portrayls were quite excellent, but just that she became someone whose thinking I could understand less and less as she became older. But aside from that minor issue, I was very addicted to reading this book, and between reads I was quite captivated by where it was going.

I'll send this off to DianaCoats once I receive her address.

I'm not sure where to begin. I struggled with the first 100 pages of this book. I could not quite get Henry and Clare's voices to separate in my head and this led to problems of keeping the continuity. Because I was part of the ring I kept at it and SUDDENLY the magic began to happen for me. It not only became easy to jump from person to person but from time to time and I was ENTHRALLED with how the writer overlapped (this is all I'll say because I don't want to spoil anything)the different "selves". My favorite nugget in the book is the little reference to Clare and Henry being like Lois Lane and Clark Kent...this conversation happens with two of their friends...I adore how it is expressed...But again, don't want to spoil it.
I am NOT a science fiction reader...but I am a reader of good literature no matter what form it takes...And hence...I was both a reader and a lover of this book.
I have permission from Dietcokemama to pass this along to my friend smilingheron before Henry hurtles back to Massachusetts...hmmm...what year is it there?

Received from DianaCoats rather long ago, and I do apologize for having been remiss in my journaling.
I put off starting it, as DianaCoats had mentioned that she'd found the first 100 pages a tad challenging. As I have a tendency to plow into books and read quickly, I found myself reluctant dive right into this one as I didn't feel up to slogging through those first 100 pages. However, encouraged my her admonition to take the reading a bit slower and really pay attention to the ages of Henry and Clare as well as the dates, I have started reading.
I'm pleased to say that I was engrossed and delighted well before the first 100 pages passed, and am eager to continue reading about Henry and Clare's most unconventional love story.
Thanks to DietCokeMama for letting me tag onto the end of the bookring!

It is time to send this book back home to dietcokemama. Again, thanks for allowing me to tag on at the end of the bookring. Finish it I did, with much enjoyment. I was delighted and engrossed by how the author created Henry's time traveling and loved watching Henry and Clare's love story unfold, through their different ages and the time traveling. It was fascinating and romantic. a very good read.

I am late in journaling that this book has made it home safe and sound from it's travels. This was my first ring and I'm so glad that it made it home safely.

This book is now in the mail on the to KateKintail in Virginia. It seems fitting since she is the person who hooked me up with Bookcrossing that I should finally be sending her a book, and that it's my first ring book.

This book has been on Mt. TBR for-EVER. I finally broke down and got the audio out of the library. Once I started it, I found I couldn't stop listening. I completely ate it up. I adore time travel stories and was excited about this one.

It started out fascinating as I got to know the characters. I loved watching Henry and Clare meet each other at various stages of their lives, nonlinearly. Meeting your future husband at age six... meeting your future wife for the first time even though she's known you for almost her whole life... trying to figure each other out and all the moving pieces. This was a beautiful love story with passion, rocky bits, excitement, trust, adventures, and cleverness.

The time travel concept was well done, I thought. I liked the idea of him being displaced in time randomly (or not so randomly, as he gets stressed), beyond his control. It comes with so many complications, though--the timing and the nakedness (inability to take anything with him that's not in his mind). It makes for some hilarious and entertaining moments. But soon I realized it was more than just some difficulties to overcome. The realism hit hard--he has to run, has to break into places, has to fight. Just when I thought the worst possibilities had happened to him... something even worse does. I actually screamed out loud during that hospital scene, after the frostbite. Absolutely terrifying--how was he to cope? And then... then the realization about his death... All the pieces fell into place so inevitably, like watching a car accident you can't look away from. "an impossibly romantic trap" really is what it is.

There are SO many moments that made me laugh or smile or rejoice, but just as many that made me cry or shriek or shudder. I love that this book explored every possible avenue from so many different angles throughout time.

Also, it was great to see TheBowieFolles' post-it on page 42. I found my 21st birthday on page 380 and put my own post-it there! :-)

Having been to Chicago before, it was so easy to picture where so much of this book took place. When I'm in Chicago for the AWP Conference in 2012, I am sure I will feel like I should expect to run into Clare or Henry or Alba (she's possibly my favorite part of the book).

Thank you SO much for giving me a chance to read this book!

KateKintail shared this with me for a "Keep Them Moving" swap on swap-bot.com. It's a great book - lots of history, and one I loved myself! This is what I said when I read another copy a few years back:

It is extremely rare for me to get emotionally attached to fictional characters. As much as I enjoy reading, it's more a pastime than a driving need to dive back into the tale. Not so with this book. I adored the characters. I was entranced by Clare and Henry's relationship, and fascinated by Henry's genetic disorder that causes him to travel through time without any control over when or where he ends up. I cried - no, sobbed - at certain moments with a depth of feeling I haven't had for fiction in a very, very long time. I highly recommend this book.

Anyway, I hope my swap partner enjoys this one as much as I did!

Thanks, Melydia! :) I also have read this book previously, but I will be sure to keep it moving. I will leave at my local OBCZ unless I find a friend who has not yet read it, in the meantime...

(It looks like I'm the voice of dissent in this long list of reviewers, as I thought it was 'just okay'. It's some years now since I read it, but I remember feeling that the concept of the relationship was somewhat flawed in that Clare accepted her fate at the hands of a random time-travelling stranger a bit too easily. Didn't make me want to rush out and read anything else by the same author but it was entertaining enough, overall.)
