Abbynormal's Wishlist bookbox in Abbynormal's Wishlist bookbox, A Bookbox -- Controlled Releases on Monday, April 24, 2006
Released 18 yrs ago (4/24/2006 UTC) at Abbynormal's Wishlist bookbox in Abbynormal's Wishlist bookbox, A Bookbox -- Controlled Releases
WILD RELEASE NOTES:
RELEASE NOTES:
Took this out of the wishlist bookbox #3. really looking forward to reading this!
I really enjoyed this book and read it over the course of three days. I had a really hard time putting it down. It was a wonderful book and plan on turning it into a ray so that other people will have the chance to read it as well.
Would like to turn this book into a book ray. I'm trying to make an effort to keep those books moving, esp those that I didn't register. I really enjoyed this book and would like the chance for other people to enjoy it as well.
To help ensure that things run smoothly (or that is the plan
anyhow), I've put together a few rough guidelines for this one. I
know that some people take longer to read a book (busy, got a bunch
of books to read before, work, etc)...
1. Please try to have this book read within 3 weeks. I know this
isn't possible, but if you make an effort to try that is all I can
ask.
2. Please journal when you receive the book.
3. When about halfway through, please contact the next person on the
list for their mailing address.
4. Please journal again when you've read the book and it is on its
way.
5. Have fun! Reading is supposed to be fun!
Sending order:
iamagirldork-NM (US)
momx3lovesbooks-NE (US)
Sirah-Finland (Europe) )<--- book ended ray here
PRCS-Canada (last) *asked to be skipped*
If interested, please PM with your location and shipping
preferences. I'll PM back. If you don't hear from me after a few days, then I didn't
get your PM. My computer isn't set up
yet due to lack of space in my current location, so I have to check my email at work. If you don't hear from me right away, please be
patient. Thanks!
Mailed to iamagirldork today to start this ray off.
Received the book today. Will start reading tonight!!!
:)
This book is so touching. I really enjoyed being a part of this as I probably never would have read this book otherwise. I have already recommended it to several people. The language is beautiful and the past/present writing I adored!
Will ship to momx3lovesbooks tomorrow!!!
SHIPPED 8/31/2006 :)
Caught today! I have 1 ring in front of this one.
When Framboise Simon returns to a small village on the banks of the Loire, the locals do not recognize her as the daughter of the infamous woman they hold responsibe for a tragedy during the German occupation years ago. But the past and present are inextricably entwined, particularly in a scrapbook of recipes and memories that Framboise has inherited from her mother. And soon Framboise will realize that the journal also contains the key to the tragedy that indelibly marked that summer of her nineth year.
I enjoyed this book, but not as much as I have her other books. This was lacking a little character development, there were to many characters thrown into the story, and then at the end when everything started to come together, I couldn't remember most of them.
10/19-mailed via surface mail.
Received the book today. Thanks!
Since I got my own copy as RABCK Xmas present from my dear BookCrossing friend Piiku, I won´t be reading this one but sending it forward to PRCS-Canada. Happy Holidays and thanks Thegoaliegirl for arranging the ray!
Well, I got answer from PRCS that she read the book already, so it looks like the ray ended up with me. I´ll see what I ´ll do in the near future to continue the ray. Thanks everyone!

Cafe Caisa in Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Wednesday, February 20, 2008
Released 16 yrs ago (2/25/2008 UTC) at Cafe Caisa in Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland
WILD RELEASE NOTES:
RELEASE NOTES:
Kirja vapautuu bookcrossareiden miitissä.
Will be released during our next meet-up in Café Caisa.
I took the book with me from our meeting, nice catch! I was wondering if I have a copy in my bookshelf or not, but decided to take it with me anyway. At home I checked that I do actually have a Finnish translation in Mt TBR. I'm still trying to decide if I read this one or the other copy, I'll keep you posted.
Thank you thegoaliegirl and Sirah for sharing.
The book is on a journey to Potok-fan in Turku, who selected it from Finnish Bookxerting envelope "Käsilaukku (Handbag)" filled with female writers.
Enjoy the book!
The "käsi-laukku" was an interesting idea. I got an envelope full of photocopies of first pages of novels. I picked this one, and it arrived in the post today. So now I now what book it is!
Interesting choice - I've read one other of Harris's titles, which I then organized into a bookring:
Blackberry Wine! So it is nice now to have this one TBR, and how apt that it too is a well-travelled copy. :)
I started reading this, but found that I was dreading having to read about the (promised on the back cover) tragedy that indelibly marked that summer of her ninth year. So I kept putting it back down again.
I think it's time to move this book on. If I haven't found a home for it by Kesäpäivät then I'll release it at our All-Finland bookcrossing meeting in June.
UPDATE: I had so many books for Kesäpäivät that I couldn't take them all! This is still awaiting a new home.
April 2010 - I'm going to offer this for a virtual book box on bookobsessed.com
UPDATE: No takers from the VBB. I think this is a book for wild release.

I feel kind of bad for not reading this book earlier. It had been sitting in my shelf for half a year before I finally got around to reading it. About a week and a half ago I finally started it, but got distracted. First we Finns won the world cup in ice hockey (against Swedes of all people, our beloved enemies ;>) so that called for a few days of partying. :D Then we had a big costume party at my work place, so reading time was again limited. And after that I just didn't feel like reading this kind of book and took to lighter, more humorous reading in stead.
Anyway, now that I have read it, I did like it for the most part. About half way through the book I wished that the author would just get to the point and stop blabbering. Towards the end the suspension grew, though. I didn't like the very ending, I thought it was too romantic and sappy, like something out of a completely different novel. That being said, I liked the overall story and the way Harris described the happier days of Framboise's childhood and her problematic relationship with her mother. The mystery of the story was intriguing, but also a bit frustrating since it seemed like forever to get to the part when Harris finally reveales what really happened.
This was the first book by Joanne Harris that I have read, but I did like her style enough to consider reading more novels by her. In fact I bought a copy of Holy fools (or the Finnish translation of it, to be more exact) from the flea market. At 50 cents it was a bargain and seems interesting enough. I'll have to read or watch Chocolat too at some point.
I'm thinking about turning this to another book ray since there seems to be some interest toward it.

I'm offering this as a book ray (the thread is here: http://www.bookcrossing.com/forum/20/458888).
The book is a paperback and a good size to be mailed around. The dimensions are 13,5 x 20,5 x 2,3 cm and it weighs around 270 grams.
Here are some basic rules:
1) This is an international ray. Please be prepared to ship internationally if you sign up. While I will try to take shipping preferences into consideration, that might not always be possible, so all participants must be ready to go international if that's what's needed for the ray to run smoothly.
2) Contact the next person on the list in good time before finishing the book. Check the list before doing this as the sending order might change.
3) Try to read the book within a month of receiving it. Make a journal entry when you receive the book, when you're done reading it and when you have mailed it to the next person on the list.
The participants (who I will organise so that the shipping costs will be kept to a minimum):
rodespringbal (Belgium -> EU)
footymadgill (UK -> International)
Originalmulli (UK -> International)
6of8 (USA -> International)
jnpert (USA -> International)
biisbsw (USA -> USA/Canada)

I loved this book. At first I thought it would be a hard nut to crack. Because of the flashbacks and the flips between present and history. The young Framboise reminded me of somebody I know very well : me :) Sometimes you have to face your demons before you can defeat them. I was also a very adventurous young girl at the age of nine, not doing what I was told and still don't.
Thanks for letting me read this wonderful book.

I think this is one of my favourite books ever. I was given a secondhand copy of it some years ago before I was a bookcrosser and have always regretted that I passed it on instead of keeping it (clearly I was always a bookcrosser at heart without knowing it!!). So I'm really glad of this chance to read it again - it's always a wonderful experience to be reunited with a book you half remember.
I love stories that twist and turn and move between past and present. This is a fascinating and delicious tale, the setting and atmosphere are so well described you can taste and smell it. It leaves you very sad for the mother, who never learned the truth, but I'm so glad there is redemption for Framboise in the end.
I'm with family abroad at the moment but have PMed the next reader, so should be ready to post this on as soon as I get home midweek.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
I finally finished this one -- sorry it took me so long! It wasn't a bad book -- the writing is beautiful and lyrical and the story is very well told. I think my main problem was that the very weight of the secrets that were being kept throughout the book lent it an air of foreboding that just made me reluctant to read it. I would recommend it to others, though, with a word of warning that if they have read as many WWII stories recently as I have, that it may almost be too much.
Popped it in the mail yesterday, so it is on the move again.

Finished this earlier today and really enjoyed it. I love Joanne Harris. There is such beauty to her writing and I love her descriptions of both food and village "politics." One of her strengths is making normal everyday places and people seem magical. However as the book ended it was all too real and I felt uncomfortable with maybe the last 40-50 pages or so (however, it should have made a reader uncomfortable.)
Thank you very much for including me on the bookray!

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the way the tragic ending was built up to slowly. It makes the reader feel similar to Boise...a release to finally get the secret out by the end. It looks like I was the last reader signed up for the ray. So, I will have to figure out a good way to release this again.
