I enjoyed this. It's a vivid snapshot into lives unlike our own. I completely related with Kit, stuck in a dreary world after such a vibrant and open childhood. I particularly liked Nat's imagery of the bright, colorful bird for sale but not suited for the land; and later his mention that they wre trying their best to turn her into a sparrow. That beautiful image stuck with me.

Had I read this as a child, I probably would have shared Kit's impression of her uncle. Stern, dreary, unyeilding. I still can feel that about him, how she feels imprisioned in the land and the family, but as an adult I can see the integrity and perserverance as well.

Will send along to knitwit as soon as I can finish A Ring of Endless Light.

ETA: On it's way to knitwit, sorry for the delay!

When you visit the summer home of William Penn just down the street from me you will hear of the horrible treatment of Quakers at the hands of Puritans in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. "They actually hanged Quakers" said the tour guide to a wide eyed bunch of third graders I was with. Absolutely appalling to a bunch of good Pennsylvanians in the heart of Quaker country...

Once again I am shocked to find a book that has personal relevance to me and mine that I hadn't read! What have I been reading all these years? I really enjoyed this one and was glad to see that Kit, her aunt and her uncle advanced the cause of religious tolerance a little during their ordeal.

The ring is now complete and this will return to Rosalinde on Monday, 21 August 2006.
