Having devoured London, Sarum was my next trip on the "History Train" with great thanks and encouragement to the master "conductor" Edward Rutherfurd. Rutherfurd is a more refined Michener and dwells a bit longer in the distant past and on the finer details.
Sarum does for the history of Britain what London did for the city of that name. Rutherfurd's pages and chapters are colorful tiles to a monumentous mosaic of time.
If you're not familiar with his works, Rutherfurd takes several characters from the very beginning of the book and describes their lives - and those of their ancestors - through a series of interwoven short-stories. I respond well to this structure and Rutherfurd is a master.
If you like historical fiction, please do yourself a favor and pick up any of these tomes. If I had it all to do over, I would have started with Sarum and gone to London or The Forest from there. Russka is another offering!
