This is the kind of book where you can smell and hear and see the fictional world the writer has created, so palpably does the atmosphere come through. Set on an island in the straits north of Puget Sound, in Washington, where everyone is either a fisherman or a berry farmer, the story is nominally about a murder trial. But since it's set in the 1950s, lingering memories of World War II, internment camps and racism helps fuel suspicion of a Japanese-American fisherman, a lifelong resident of the islands. It's a great story, but the primary pleasure of the book is Guterson's renderings of the people and the place.

I picked up two parcels from the post office. I had that mixture of excitement and despair, as I am trying to sort out a bookring glut at the moment. So I was a bit sad that I had just yesterday sent two out, and here were two more! Well, one was a ring, but the second I opened was a fantastic surprise! My frown turned itself upside down! Thanks for the sneaky RABCK, catsalive. I will put it on my priority list to read and pass on. You made my day!

I found a duplicate copy of this at my farm. I must have bought it ages ago. I still haven't read it, but I will send this copy on to frangipani08, as promised.

Thanks, DrCris! I'm looking forward to reading this one. May be a while though as I am still getting through the books I received from winning the Smile Day RABCK!

I am looking for books in good condition to go in convention goody bags so I am going to let this one go!

Journal Entry 9 by saine from Melbourne CBD, Victoria Australia on Thursday, July 10, 2008
I picked up this book in my goodie bag for the 2008 Bookcrossing Convention. I was really pleased when I saw it, because I've always wanted to read it. Unfortunately, my bag was over the limit for Tiger Airways, so I had to dump some things and this was one of them. I left it somewhere where I thought it would find a loving new owner, though!
