This is a collection of short stories about the precolonial and colonial past of Djibouti, set alongside those set in the postcolonial era. The writer is from Djibouti, although he has moved to France.

Sadly, I did not enjoy this book much. The stories felt more like descriptions or ramblings than like stories to me. They had little or no plot in the traditional sense. And I found them difficult to understand. The introduction, which describes a little bit about Djibouti, was actually the best part of the book for me.

Because Djibouti is a country for which I found it difficult to find authors, and because someone has requested it, I'm forming a bookray to share this book with anyone who'd like to read it.

Bookray Guidelines:

  1. Journal the book when you get it. Contact the next person in the list for their mailing address.
  2. When done, take a minute to journal your impressions and note that you're sending the book on. I love reading various people's feelings on books - we're bound to have different viewpoints. Since I didn't much care for this, I'm particularly interested to hear what you thought.
  3. Yes, sometimes “life happens”. If you find yourself running behind or need to be skipped, etc., please PM me letting me know what’s up and we can work it out.
  4. At the end of the ray, please do what you wish with the book - begin another ray or ring, wild release, or whatever.

I also didn't enjoy this book very much, the stories were not very interesting and somehow I didn't understand them easily. Some parts were good where there was more descriptions of Djibouti included.
I read this book as part of my Book from everywhere in the world -challenge.

When I first opened this bookand noticed that Forewords and Introduction are over 30 pages and the real book only 86 pages, I didn't know if I wanted to laugh or cry. I read the forewords and introduction and I'm glad I did so. If I hadn't read them, I wouldn't have enjoyed the book as I did now.

I really liked this book. Actually this is one of the bes African books (though there is not many of them) that I've read in English. The reading took time; at leas I had to really think and imagine every sentence, because descriptions were so poetry. Despite of that I read the whole book in one day. I can only say that I'm glad I joined this ray. Thank you, hobbit, for organizing this ray!
This book will be part of my Book From Every Country -challenge (Djibouti).

Next The Land Without Shadows will travell to Germany.

Hm, I'm very ambiguous about this book - some stories I liked, some I just didn't understand. The introduction was really interesting and I really liked 'The Dasbiou Mystery', 'A Woman and a Half' and 'Sound Mix'. An interesting experience...

Thanks for this bookray, hobbit, it's on its way to ffortsa!

Another book for the Olympic Challenge - thanks.

FINALLY found and read this book. I liked the writing, and the short, almost folk-like stories held my interest, but at the end of the slim volume I wondered why anyone would stay in such a sad, sad country - nothing in this book would entice me to travel there. The author himself now lives in France.
