9 out of 10

Sweaty, repulsive sex-maniac Bruno and his cerebral, detached half-brother Michel contemplate sex and death. And there is lots of both. Quite nasty in parts, but very funny, especially when Bruno gets caught with his trousers down, also when poking fun at woolly-headed New Agers.

I found this quite strange and it failed to engage me so by page 71 I was giving up. I'm sorry to have held this up for so long but will get it on its way again as soon as I have perfect-circle's details.

Journal Entry 7 by perfect-circle from Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear United Kingdom on Tuesday, January 15, 2008

8 out of 10

Bleak, tragic, touching, amusing, mildly pornographic, this book is many things and, despite the rather bleak ending, I quite enjoyed it. Some of the science bits felt a little over my head at times but the poking fun at New Agers was enjoyable.

Off to Stubee & Kt-J in the morning. Thanks shnedwards!

7 out of 10

I quite enjoyed this although some of the science bits did go a bit over my head! This is quite an interesting look at life, death, relationships and sex; at times quite vividly described but also quite touching (no pun intended) and ultimately a quite sad look at the fate of mankind.

Thanks Shnedwards for another interesting book! I've passed this back to Stubee now.

OK call me perverted but I really enjoyed this book. The protagonists, brothers, Bruno Clément and Michel Djerzinski are fascinating characters, they both lead very sad and loveless lives, even if in Michel’s case this is somewhat accomplished. I really enjoyed Houellebecq’s narrative which is excellent but as with everyone else here the science was at times difficult to understand and I times I did get confused by the timeline on a couple of occasions.

All in all an enjoyable read and after reading this I’ll probably look out for more of Michel Houllebecq’s work.

Thanks once again to Shnedwards for organising this bookray, I’ve got Bibliocrates address so this will be in the mail at some point this week.

[EDIT: Sent 30th April 2008]
