I picked this up in my local used book store yesterday. The author is Japanese. The story is about a couple who marry against their families' wishes, and the man's experience discovering Zen.

I suppose it's a cultural gap but I was unable to understand exactly why it was so terrible that the main characters got married or in what way they betrayed their friend. And, although the text on the back of the book says that the man's Zen experience is a gateway to new understanding, I thought it was a futile, passing episode in the novel rather than anything pivotal.

Due to my lack of understanding, I was basically left somewhat puzzled by this book. I actually read it through, set it aside, and then returned several weeks later to skim through again and see if I got further insights - but no such luck.

Somehow I ended up with about 4 books from Japanese authors when my family was helping me search at the used bookstore. This is the first one I picked up to read, but I'll have a chance to broaden my experience. But, in any case, I am counting this one as my book by a Japanese author in my attempt to read books from every country.

The book arrived yesterday - but it was my son's birthday, and, understandably, I wasn't able to make an entry! thanks so much for sending!
I already had a look inside, and I have a feeling that you have to treat this book carefully, and with different attitudes than western books.
I think I am going to like this. May I set the status to "PC", if I really enjoy it?

This was really a special book. It took some time to read it, and I had to make frequent pauses to "digest" what I had read so far. It is slow-going writing, for sure.
Although nothing much seems to happen, most of what is really going on takes place in the protagonists' soul - and I guess this is what made the book so innovative in its own time. I have had relatively few experiences with Japanese writers, but somehow I can feel that it is occupying a special place in Japanese literature.

As a western reader, I had some difficulties actually "liking" it, of course. But I want to keep it nevertheless. I have just received another book by this author, and I'd like to compare the writing style. And I just love having some "classics" around!

thanks, hobbit, for your affirmative answer ;-))
