I bought this in my local used bookstore today. The author is from Beirut, Lebanon, although she left due to the war.

This book was interesting. It is the story of a woman in Beirut, told through letters that she writes - not to be sent, but really for herself. She writes to the city, to the war, to her best friend, to her lover, etc. Unfortunately, although this is an interesting premise, it ends up as mostly a regular narrative book except that each chapter begins with an address to the recipient of the letter.

I did find this an interesting and enjoyable story,

A couple of interesting passages:
"Sorrow and joy are two sides of the same coin, Miss Know-It-All. There are things to make you laugh and things to make you cry in this world and the next."

"Don't be fooled, Ali," remarked Jawad. "Money, not national unity, is what binds people together, from the informers, to the militia, to Israel in the skies."
