I bought this in my local used book store today. The author is from Cuba.

There were some interesting parts to this book and some striking passages but, overall, I found it a bit too filled with metaphor and allusion for my taste. Also, the narrator seemed too detached from his own story - although it was written in the first person, there was not much passion or sense of involvement in the events.

Unfortunately, this copy of the book is filled with someone's underlines and notations in the margins. I find that quite distracting. Fortunately, I can't easily read their writing so I was spared their literary musings and left to formulate my own.

This will represent Cuba in my attempt at the Olympic Challenge - reading books by authors from each country that participates in the Olympics.

Well, I just finished this - took me ages because the print is quite small and I wasn't really enjoying it. The hero is insufferable. I wanted to punch him in the face. He is selfish, arrogant and chauvinistic, as well as pretentious. I kept going in the hope he might get his come-uppance!

Hobbit, I could read the annotations (doctor's secretary - used to bad handwriting!) and they weren't literary musings, they just stated quite obvious things. I did rather pity the poor person having to study it though, it must have been tough to write about.
