Amazon review:
The extraordinary Maisie Dobbs returns in her second case. London, 1929, Joseph Waite is a man who knows what he wants. With his Havana cigars and Savile Row suits, he is one of Britain's wealthiest men. And the last thing he needs is a scandal. When his eighteen-year-old daughter runs away from home, he is determined to keep the case away from the police and the newspapers. So he turns to a woman renowned for her discretion and investigative powers - the extraordinary Maisie Dobbs. Maisie soon discovers that there are many reasons why Charlotte might have left home. Instinctively Maisie feels that Charlotte is safe. Yet, suddenly, she finds herself confronting a murder scene...With wonderful characters and a page-turning plot, "Birds of a Feather" is a brilliant mystery. Fans of Maisie Dobbs will be delighted to see Maisie's sleuthing abilities back in action, while the emotional heart of her second mystery will appeal to yet more fans.

i've finished reading this and loved it to bits. Its a delightful murder mystery with a definite difference as it deal with sometimes quite difficult emotional issues. The setting in the 1920's adds to it all and I'm now looking forward to reading the next Maisie Dobbs story. Setting up the ring now so will soon be off on its travels.

This book was hugely gripping from start to finish. It used the character created in Maisie Dobbs to explore some of the murkier moral issues of war and pacifism. I was utterly involved in the story and am extremely pleased to have read it immediately following the first book in the series which I found to be problematic in its structure.
Thanks to Cloggy and Dogsapples for giving me the chance to read this, and I'd love to join a ring for book 3 as and when one appears ;-)

The book will be on its way to Rillaith as soon as I have her address.

Arrived this morning, along with the first book, Maisie Dobbs. I'll get on to them both as soon as possible.

This was so much better than the first one, a good mystery (although I did work it out), and really kept my attention from start to finish. The characterisations are much improved, and the way in which she allows us to feel how everyone is still haunted by the events of the terrible World War is hauntingly done. Vivid descriptions of London, the countryside and Hastings really bring the scenes to life.

Thanks very much, dogsapples, for giving me the opportunity to become acquainted with Maisie, I shall look forward to her further assignments.

I've pm'd mrsdanvers for her address and will send both books off when I have it.

Jacqueline Winspear clearly has access to a huge amount of research; the detail of 1920s London is very well drawn.
An improvement on the first book this slips in Maisie's back-story gently. An enjoyable quick read which stands out for the depth of description and the interesting use of human psychology.
(I'm afraid I worked out what it was all about pretty quickly, but that didn't spoil the book for me).

I enjoyed the first book in the series but this was gripping from the first page to the last. It dealt with several important & emotional issues left over from the war. I love the setting of 1920's London & the South East. I'm looking forward to the next in the series which I have on order from Amazon!

Thank you dogsapples & cloggy!

I have AnglersRest's address & both books wil be off on their travels asap.

What a wonderful series :)

This book and the first arrived together, hidden in a book box, masquerading as an NSS parcel (which wasnĀ“t!) - so it took me a while to open it! (And apologies for not journalling it at the time.)

I read them both last week, and theyĀ“re wonderful stories, Masie and the other characters are full of life and interest, and I found it hard to put them down.

IĀ“ve lent them both to truemortality while IĀ“m out of the country, and will post them on at the beginning of December when IĀ“m back. Thank you ever so much for sending this book out on a ring!

(IĀ“ve not jurnalled the first at the same time, as I didnĀ“t make a note of the BCID before I left it with TM, foolishly. IĀ“ll journal it before I post it on.)

Journal Entry 20 by truemortality from Hounslow, Greater London United Kingdom on Sunday, December 10, 2006
Easily on par with the first book; no sign of sequel syndrome here. Will be keeping an eye out for the later books.
