Jane dreams of being chosen as the freshman member a dominant school clique made up of one girl from each class. When her wish is granted, and she is offered a place in their group, Jane discovers the terrible price of their particular kind of popularity. There is a sinister secret to their power, one that will change Jane forever. Darkly humorous and dead on, this book will leave readers shivering in recognition.

My 47th read of 2007.

This was a little bit Heathers, a little bit The Clique, but certainly a strange storyline for a teen book. Not the whole popularity thing, but just the way the girls obtained the popularity. The ending left me with too many unanswered questions: What did happen with Ms. Lear that she is the way she is? What's up with the freaking cats? How did the whole thing come about? And what about the life-size goddesses? A bit of a letdown to finish the book and not get all these answers.

I got really sucked into this one, and then BAM! it ended and I'm thinking, but, hey, wait! What about Lurl?! Someone seriously needs to punish her! Even though Jane did and thought some things she shouldn't have been proud of, I really think that the punishment didn't fit the crime. I'm glad Phil was still there for her at the end, but I agree with EllyMae, there were a lot of things that just weren't satisfactorily resolved. Still though, it grabbed me, and even creeped me out a bit (writing the JE at 1:30 AM, because I just finished and can't quite sleep yet after it!)

Thanks for passing this one on to me EllyMae, next stop is Fantasy! Enjoy!
