From the back cover:-

"She lay on her bed. Florence, tight-mouthed, put wet pads over her eyes and applied a layer of green astringent paste.

'The stuff's stinging me,' Miss Bellamy muttered with difficulty. Florence completed the mask. Miss Bellamy attempted to say, 'All right, you can go to hell and sulk there!' She heard Florence go out of the room.

Ten minutes later Florence returned and looked down on the greenish, blinded face. But Miss Bellamy wasnot yet dead."

I caught this book at the Greenwich meet-up a little earlier today (which was great - thank you all who made it such a lovely, fun afternoon). I am adding to my already heaving Mount to-be-read, so no promises, I'm afraid, about how quickly it might be in circulation again. Books have been known to rest on Mt TBR for many, many moons.

I love Marsh's books but had not even heard of this one before, let alone read it!

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

ETA: Rivercassini (see next JE) is quite right! She has this book on Mt Tbr; I released another book entirely. Misread my notes. Sorry about that!

But, but, but, rahar - I have this book on my to-be-read pile! Really, I do.

I enjoyed this tight little murder mystery, but it brought home to me just how long it is since I read Ngaio Marsh regularly and why I stopped. Marsh wrote around the 1960s and even at the time they were old-fashioned. Now, False Scent, is positively dated. By comparison to today's thrillers, the pace is slow, the mystery predictable and the language stuccato.

And a note to anyone else who is thinking of reading thiss: avoid reading the blurb on the back of the book because it gives away too much too soon.

Read June 2008

Will probably take along to the next meet up I go to.

I came to London from Glasgow for the weekend, for a wedding. I found this book in The Camel & Artichoke while killing time before the train home. On the train I found out I'd read this one before - with classic mystery stories I'm often not sure if I have read them or not. However, I'll always pick them up because I occasionally teach adult education classes in Golden Age crime fiction. It's not a bad one, I liked the theatrical setting, though I'm really not a fan of Inspector Alleyn, he is a horrible snob. NB to the previous giver, Ngaio Marsh was a woman, in fact a Dame! I released this book back home in the West End of Glasgow by leaving it on the Underground. Hope someone finds it!
