Synopsis
If I didn't spy, I'd be in the dark eternally. I live in a maze of unknowing -- Maisie's maze - - and I hate it. I need to be informed ...; The summer of 1967, at a decaying house in the heart of Suffolk: an artist is painting a portrait of thirteen-year-old Maisie and her elder sisters, beautiful Julia and bookish Finn. Maisie embarks on a portrait of her own: she begins an account of her family and of her village friend Daniel Nunn, a young man she idolises, whom she watches over the chasm of a class divide. But is Maisie's description of a summer idyll all it seems? This is the summer when the three sisters' lives will irrevocably, and terribly, change. The winter of 1991, in London: the now-famous portrait of the three sisters features in a major retrospective. Daniel Nunn, haunted by the vanished England of his childhood, obsessed by the three sisters and newly determined to understand what happened that last summer, pursues the ghosts of his past.

I haven't read a Sally Beauman Novel in years and throughly enjoyed this one.

This arrived today with thanks to redhouse. I am first on the list, not sure why as I will now have to post to Canada. Never mind I obviously forgot to tell redhouse that we have no surface mail for books outside Italy(I know 'strange')and I am having to cut back on my international postage due to increased costs! Never mind, still much cheaper than buying a copy here in Italy and certainly more fun! Looks like it will an exciting read so I am delighted to be first and will get on with reading it as soon as I finish my current read.

I really loved this, it is certainly amongst my favourite reads this year.
Thanks so much redhouse for offering it up as a bookring and for letting me join with my awkward preferences. The list has even been juggled to suit ME, thanks so much everyone it is appreciated.
The story centres on the life of three sisters during an idyllic summer in Suffolk in 1967 when events change their lives for ever. The story is taken up again some 25 years later by a different narrator looking back on that summer.
Highly recommend this title.

Journal Entry 7 by Twynnie from Royston, Hertfordshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, October 4, 2006
This book is so very sad in places, it was quite emotionally draining to read. It was really well written though, and the details of the tragic story revealed one by one in a way that made it impossible to stop reading. I enjoyed the beginning of book more than the end, Maisie was easier to like than any of the characters who have a turn narrating later on. Julia and Finn in particular made some infuriating decisions. I liked Daniel and sympathised with him but he does spend way too much time feeling sorry for himself...

I would recommend reading this book to anyone, as long as you have plenty of tissues to hand!

This book is now on it's way to lauraloo29, I posted it last week I think, but I'm not sure which day!

Arrived here today. It's bigger than I expected! But anxious to start. Unfortunately, backed up a bit at the moment, so it may take me a little longer than usual, but never fear. I'll get to it! And I'll post an update if it's too much longer than expected. Thanks, redhouse!

12/3/06 -- Starting book today.

Journal Entry 11 by indygo88 from Lafayette, Indiana USA on Tuesday, December 26, 2006
I apologize for keeping this longer than intended and I actually finished it a few days ago, but with the holiday chaos, have not had time to really sit at the computer to journal my thoughts.

I loved this book. It's a wonder to me why it's not more well-known. I read a review of it on Bookreporter.com (in the U.S. it's called "The Sisters Mortland") and thought it sounded interesting, so was very happy when redhouse tracked me down to join the ring. :') It's a hard book to describe, I think, or at least to write my thoughts without spoiling anything. It drew me in almost from the beginning and throughout the whole thing, you get this undercurrent of mystery and intrigue, and you're waiting to see what will be revealed. I would also say that I enjoyed the first half more -- and I'd almost rate this book a "10", but I have to admit that I was a little disappointed with how the author wrapped it up, and thus this will be a 9-star for me. But overall a great read! I am curious about other titles by this author....

I have pammykn's address & will be shipping this out to her tomorrow! Thanks for including me in the ring, redhouse! :')

Just arrived today. Will finish my current read and then immediately start this one.
Have to comment on (1) the well-done BC label. Nice phrasing and lovely drawing (label by boirina), and (2) the out-of-the box mailing pouch. Loved it. A creative way to reuse mailers. A full-size picture was used to cover the old addresses and the clean, reverse side became the new address side. LOVE this idea.
Anyway....will journal again as soon as I finish reading.

Romany gypsies

Beauman has a lush writing style. I was drawn in from the very first page.
But, this is one of those tales that you have to approach with absolutely no expectations, just let the narration take you where it will - sort of like a spiral dance. I was actually disconcerted by the change in narrator, which led the story in a much more disturbing direction than I expected. I was caught up in Maisie's world from Maisie's point of view, and really didn't want to leave it.
Very incestuous, complex relationships here. Made me think about the old saying "too much familiarity leads to contempt". (These people needed to expand their social circle.) The decaying abbey seemed a metaphor for the erosion of relationships -- or of integrity -- not much honesty between friends in this seemingly close group. Everyone seemed to be falling apart under the surface - very brooding, unhappy bunch.
The Tarot card names used for book sections was very apt - the meaning of the cards never being as obvious as they seem on the surface. The letters presented at the beginning of each chapter set the mood for what was to come next - well done.
An unusual book - not what I expected at all - but very intersting. Would try another by Beauman.

(passing along next week to the next reader)

I liked it, but didn't LOVE it. I thought it was a nice read, but it didn't completely grab me. It's one of those that I would read another by the author, but I certainly wouldn't rush right out to get another one. :)

It was a bit sad in places, but I never got too attached to anyone to care as much as perhaps was intended...if that makes any sense. :)

Thanks so much for sharing!! It will be off early next week. :)

I finished this book and was disappointed. I think this book had the potential of being great but fell short. The author writes from different characters points of view, and I enjoyed this. I loved the first point of view which was Maisies, I wish the author had continued from her perspective. I found this book far too depressing, there were no bright spots. I don't think the book was wrapped up well, it left so many unanswered questions. The author writes description and narration very well. I felt as if I was in the book which made it feel all the more depressing to me. I also hated the negative way that God was portrayed in this book.

Thanks for sharing this book with me. I am getting this ready to send home to redhouse.

CAUGHT IN CAMBRIDGE UK

Journal Entry 25 by FlossieT from Cambridge, Cambridgeshire United Kingdom on Friday, November 28, 2008
Fantastic. I really, really enjoyed this - very vivid, fabulously unreliable narrator, nice twisty plot. In fact, I liked it so much that I've bought a copy to keep in my own library, while releasing the one I 'caught' (from BookMooch, so a very civilised catch) back into the wild.

Edit: even better, I just noticed this was originally released in Suffolk!! One of the things I loved about this book was its brilliant evocation of place in its depictions of the Suffolk countryside. Now it feels like an even more genuine read....
