Brick Lane chronicles the story of Nazneen, who was left to her fate. Following her late mothers admonitions Nazneen doesn't try to stand in the way of her fate. This brings her from Bangledesh to England with her husband, Chanu, who is always coming up with grand schemes but never seems to follow through. Many aspects of the story deal with what it's like to be an immigrant, in an immigrant community and raise children born to a new culture.

It is Nazneen's wayward sister's letters that shock her into another way of thinking. She starts to make an effort to guide her fate rather than just blindly accept it.

I did not enjoy this book. It was slow and boring. The story documents an Indian woman's arranged marriage to a Indian who immigrates to England. Slowly oh so slowly she emerges from her shell to become her own person instead of an extension of her husband
