After her parents were killed, young Rachel Vandermere decided that her mission in life was to find and stop the monsters responsible. Now, as an Interpol agent working to thwart an assassination, she meets art history professor Nathan Cross, who is brilliant, gorgeous, and her prime suspect until he stops the real assassin. Rachel catches a glimpse of a monster who leaves the fingerprints of an orphaned boy who has disappeared from the same boarding school where Nathan, also an orphan, was raised. Centuries ago, a priest turned the men of a village into gargoyles, paranormal beings who could shift into monstrous shapes to protect and save the weak. They are also immortal through reincarnation, providing that in each life they father a son.

This storyline should delight both paranormal and fantasy fans alike. Creating immortal shape shifters that could be reincarnated for as many lifetimes as they like after fathering a son during each of those lives was certainly an inventive premise.
The history of gargoyles, Rachel's background and the evil hunting the secret society kept me interested till the end and the romance didn't disturbe me that much :)
