This book has not been rated.

There's not much on the book cover or on Google that I can borrow from to say something about this book before reading it. It was written in French in 1960 by an author originally from the African country Benin, although he later moved to Ghana and then Europe.

I ordered it from a used bookstore. It will be filling the slot for an author from Benin in my attempt to read books by authors from every country by summer of 2008.

6 out of 10

This book was interesting in parts, but wasn't consistent. It has a narrator who was personally involved in the story but it's hard to imagine how he could have known of all the events. He doesn't appear consistently through the story (or even appear in most of the story) so I'd forget that it was being narrated in the first person and then it would come back in and surprise me. The best part was where the protagonist was describing his background to the narrator (about the first half of the book) - it had more feeling and emotional insight.

I didn't like the ending. I found it unsatisfying and even a bit puzzling.
