what a wonderful story teller Che was.... absolutely loved his style and the stories themselves were so interesting that i am now going to pursue this book for my PC AND plan to visit South America to have a look for myself.

As conflicted as I am about Che's later involvement with violent revolutionary activity and as a Communist prosecutor of political prisoners (supposedly without fair trials), I enjoyed his account of travels around South America. The translation leaves a little to be desired and is occasionally awkward, and the book jacket makes the content seem more salacious than it really is, but it is still a quick read. Sadly, I am sure that mistreatment of the indigenous and poverty still exist in these countries. It seems that the socialism and uprising of the proletariat that he advocates has not really made that much progress either. I am curious, tho, if the people they met along the way would be as hospitable and generous to two penniless freeloaders fifty years later. The companion CD is a nice touch as well (though it gets stuck towards the end - just fast forward).

This is off to boirina in Portugal in the next couple of days. There is no more international surface mail but first class is not too expensive, so it should (affordably!) take a short time to cross the Atlantic. Disfrutelo!

I haven't managed to finish the book. I'm sorry. I had seen the film, and that didn't help much, but also, I kept wondering what the words would be in Spanish. And at some point last weekend I just decided to give up. There was no way I could enjoy reading it if I couldn't stop mentally translating it back into Spanish...

So I asked for CanberraPenny's address, and she asked me to be skipped, and then I asked whitehorsy who sent her addy today.

The book will start its journey to Belgium in a few hours.

ETA: The book got here safely, but the CD was cracked in two, only joined by the sticker. It couldn't be read, obviously. So... the CD is gone to CD heaven. :(

To be honest I was a bit disappointed by this book, somehow I had expected more. Just as boirina I had already seen the movie before and thoroughly enjoyed that. Actually the movie told me more and moved me much more than the book. Strange because most of the time it's the other way around. Anyway, I'm glad I've read the book as well, it just wasn't what I expected.

I enjoyed this book just as much as I enjoyed the film, in fact I've actually bought a copy from Amazon to give to the friend I went to see the film with. I've PM'ed safrolistics and she's already got her own copy so I'll now PM PurpleElephant.

A great book. I feel like Ive learned a lot about South America and its people. Couldn't help wondering as I read how much of it has changed since 'Che' was writing. I wonder what happened to the people they met along the way..
