I wanted to read this book long before it was made into a film as so many people said how good it was. I never seemed to get around to finding a copy and didn't really know what the book was about. Then I saw the film and really wanted to read the book.

When I started reading this I was a bit disappointed as it seemed to be the same as the film and I was hoping the book would inspire a bit more debate and would have more depth.

I don't subscribe to the "films are always worse than the book" view point as I can think of plenty of books that have been improved by dramatisation. However, this book is much better than the film. The plot is basically the same; but I can remember bits in the film and thinking why does this need to be here? Those are the bits that were either not in the book or altered I guess to make the film more commercial.

This book seemed particularly relevant to me as I was the same age as the character in the book. I think the main character "Richard" was well created and in general Garland is much better at writing male characters than female. Apart from "Sal" all the other characters he develops in "The Beach" are male.

I think this is deserved of its "Cult" status and I enjoyed it! I wish I hadn't seen the film first though. So I'd advise you to read this before you see the film.
