From http://www.cyberhaven.com/books/sciencefiction/harshmoon.html

Robert A. Heinlein was the dominant science fiction writer of the modern era, a writer whose influence on the field was, according to Samuel R. Delany, "so pervasive that modern critics, attempting to wrestle with that influence find themselves dealing with an object rather like the sky or an ocean" He won science fiction's Hugo Award for Best Novel four times, a record that still stand. "The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress" was the last of those Hugo-winning novels and is widely acclaimed as his finest work.

It is a tale of revolution, of the rebellion of a former penal colony on the Moon against its masters on the Earth. It is a tale of a culture whose family structures are based on the presence of two men for every woman, leading to novel forms of marriage and family. It is the story of the disparate people -- a computer technician, a vigorous young female agitator, and an elderly academic -- who become the movement's leaders. And it is the story of Mike, the supercomputer whose sentence is known only to the revolt's inner circle, who for reasons of his own is committed to the revolution's ultimate success.

It is one of the high points of modern science fiction, a novel bursting with invention, with a natural-seeming future dialect, with familial warmth and human passion, with insight into artificial intellgence and grass-roots politics and the problems of human freedom and the overweening state. It is a great political novel and a great survey of the human prospect. It is an outstanding novelist's most outstanding work.

"The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress" is the great American libertarian novel, a tale of revolution, love, and artificial intelligence that remains as sharp today as the day it first appeared.

Fantastic book. I had a bit of trouble getting used to the Loonie slang, but otherwise a very intelligent book. Highly recommended!

1967 Hugo Award for best novel.

Loved it. The slang works well once you're past the first few pages, and it's just a great story.

The book will travel onwards to Plinius once I get the address.

Now that was fun! There were two moments I got a bit bored with all the revolution planning, but otherwise a great read. Strangely enough, as a SF reader, I haven't read much Heinlein, I always thought it to be too much fiftees SF. I've read stranger in a strange land, wich I also loved, but is a very different book then this one.

You can see and feel the navy-training Heinlein has had. It must have been fun for him as well, to write about this.

I resembled for me 'Dogs of war' a Frederick Forsyth book about planning a rev in some African country.

I will PM E-mile.

Edit: E-mile heeft verzocht om van de lijst af te mogen. Ik denk nog even verder, want ik ben nu de laatste in de ray...

Wishlist RABCK arrived yesterday! Thanks so much iiwi! And (lol) yes I am a "her". ;)

From the front cover:

A major new novel by the dean of American science fiction writers
ROBERT A. HEINLEIN
THE MOON IS A HARSH MISTRESS

From the back cover:

THE MOON IS A HARSH MISTRESS

Luna of the 21st century is a penal colony where everyone lives under the dictatorship of the hated Authority. But the inevitable takes place one day when Mike, the master computer who controls everything on Luna devises an intricate revolutionary plot with the help of a professor, a beautiful blonde, and a jack-of-all-trades. The conspirators' plans go along beautifully for a while...

"Heinlein is one of the best, if not the best, writer of science fiction today. This book is one of his best. The plot is excellent, and excellently handled... fiction with a scientific base, intrigue, and fast-paced action." -- Library Journal

"...makes for a degree of provocation, adrenalinizing, mind-stretching, conviction-testing unmatched by any contemporary." -- Theodore Sturgeon, National Review

I finally finished reading this last Saturday, which just happened to be Robert A. Heinlein's 100th birthday (weird coincidence, eh?)

I originally added this book to my wishlist after my boss highly recommended it to me. He had checked it out of the local library and taken it on vacation with him, and he ended up sitting up late in a hotel bathroom finishing it (the only place he could read without disturbing his wife and child).

I did very much enjoy this book. Mike in particular was a fabulous character. Take this quote:

Mike was silent at least two seconds. "Man my best friend, did you ever think of getting a job as a computer?"

LOVE it! The ending left me a little sad, but overall a great scifi novel. This was actually the first Heinlein I've ever read, although I have another 2 sitting on Mt. TBR. May have to bump them up after this.

Thanks again iiwi for RABCKing this to me! I will be passing it on soon in similiar fashion. Reserved.
