Tsunami just sounds better than "seismic sea wave", doesn't it?
The civil defense sirens go off on the first working day of every month as a test. I'm not positive, but I *think* they chose that date because of the April 1, 1946 tsunami. My father was a boy, and he remembers hearing about it on the radio as it was happening (he was living on Oahu and the tsunami was hitting the Big Island).
For more info on tsunamis, I recommend the Pacific Tsunami Museum in Hilo.
This book is set along the Oregon coast, and so far it's the only book set in Oregon I've read this year, although I hope to get through another eventually. Meanwhile, I'll use this book to check off Oregon for my 50 States Reading Challenge.
Oregon is the 33rd state and it's celebrating 150 years of statehood this year. My home state is only at 50!
I know at least one person who lives in the Beaver State, but I'm not sure I've ever been there. I guess I should, one of these days.
Here's another copy on my shelf.
The Oregon state flag is interesting because it's got a different design on each side. Image taken from the Flags of the World (FOTW) website and converted to jpg format. All credits for flag graphics are as shown at FOTW.
