Amazon.co.uk Review
There's something exceptionally comforting about a short story collection like Girls' Night Out, Boys' Night In. Firstly, there's the choice--this is a truly bumper package, with more than 30 stories by some of contemporary fiction's most familiar names including Kathy Lette, Matt Beaumont, Mike Gayle, Josie Lloyd and Emlyn Rees. Not only is there some superb writing on offer but you're guaranteed there'll be a story for every mood you're in--be it optimism, anger, revenge, love or hatred. And if you embark on a story you don't like--and there may be a few of those--you can just move on. A few pages further on, there'll be another to grab you, such as "Obedience", the story of a local murder (a nasty stabbing with a cauliflower knife) told by a man more interested in his puppy's progress at obedience classes; or "Delivering Happyware", in which two teenage girls struggle with crushes and their summer job as door-to-door touters of "speedy mops", freezer boxes and toast cutters; or even "Little Boots", an "unfairy" tale about a man whose wife has long since become preoccupied with everything but him and his new dog--a rangy beast with outsized paws and a face full of teeth the size of hunting knives.

Was this from a swap? I totally forgot about it, but am so grateful to have it!!! I can't wait to dive into it! Thanks so much for this book, and the surprise one too. You're such a sweetheart.
I'm not actually sure when the package arrived though, as it was mailed to my old address. Luckily, one of my best buds still lives in the building, and he saw the package, picked it up, and let me know. I was only just able to pick it up today. Am glad it's safe though!

Girls' Night Out
Okay, finished the girls' side of the book. Honestly, what a strange collection of stories. A couple of these seemed out of place for the type of book they were being placed in. The only ones that really stood out for me were Colette Caddle's When the Fat Lady Sings and Santa Montefiore's The Fortune Teller. The rest of these (even the ones by authors I usually enjoy) just weren't up to par, some even being downright awful.

My 156th read of 2007.
Boys' Night In
I guess I am a finisher, too, 'cause I finished the boys' half of the book, though I'm not sure why. I liked the first story and the last story, but that's about it. The rest were pretty boring, or pretty strange. I did skip two because I just couldn't get into them.
