Journal Entry 1 by wingcatsalivewing from Rooty Hill, New South Wales Australia on Sunday, March 19, 2006
A painting by a famous English artist, JMW Turner, has been rediscovered - worth millions. The owners must be traced before it can be sold. But who owns the painting? The answer to that question involves a search spanning seventy years and three continents. And it begins with John Gulliver, fly-by-night publisher, who leaves Britain inder a cloud to come to Australia with his family in 1910.

Aboard the Southern Maid, catastrophe strikes - and the Gullivers are scattered to the four corners of the earth. Their subsequent fortunes involve the dangers of life in Russia during the Stalinist purges, the glitter of Hollywood in the silent movie era, upheavals in revolutionary Bolivia, minor racketeering in Australia and intrigue in colonial New Guinea. Linking the destinies of all the Gullivers is Turner's 'Harwich Seascape'... and the skulduggery of the contemporary art market.
