An interesting read. I don't think Seagrave is the most unbiassed of writers. It starts with a diatribe against the Japanese. It calms down after a while, but I think it remains worth remembering Seagraves viewpoint throughout. That's not to say that the Japanese elite haven't acted appallingly to it's own citizens, to the citizens of SE Asia and to Europeans during the Pacific War, nor that the country doesn't remain corrupt and fails to distribute its wealth more equitably.
This is unlike the two previous books I have read. It does not idolise its subject, unlike The Last Shogun and The Last Samurai.

I have number of books to read, but feel drawn to read another biography of a sovereign. This time Elizabeth I.
