In his will, Senhor da Silva Araujo has left a memoir that's a touching web of elaborate self-deception. He desired so ardently to prosper, to be taken seriously, but most of all to be a good man. And yet, shady deals, twists of fate, an illegitimate child: such is the lot of poor self-critical Senhor da Silva Araujo.

This was an interesting book. I enjoyed the quirky character of the deceased, as seen through what he left in his will and the eyes of his nephew and daughter. I'm glad the book was not a complete rendering of the will as it was purportedly more than twice the number of pages in this book. I don't see how it would be possible to read it aloud in one afternoon, as was purportedly done in the plot!

But the ending was a little uncertain - I was left wondering how long they kept searching for the woman he left a book to, what happened with his house, and various other questions.

Note: this book is filling the slot for a book by an author from Cape Verde in my attempt at the "Olympic Challenge" - reading books from all 202 countries that participate in the Olympics .

I'm going to offer this book as a bookring, linked with another book: The Return of the Water Spirit by Pepetela. Authors are from Angola and Cape Verde.

If you want to read just one, that's ok - sign up for the linked ring, read whichever you want, and send them on to the next person.

Bookring Guidelines:

  • Journal the books as soon as you get them. Contact the next person in the list for their mailing address.
  • Please try to read within a month so the ring keeps moving. I know there are two of them, but they're not long.
  • When done, take a minute to journal your impressions and note that you're sending them on. I love reading various people's feelings on the books - we're bound to have different viewpoints!
  • Yes, sometimes “life happens”. If you find yourself running behind or need to be skipped, etc., please PM me letting me know what’s up and we can work it out.
  • Please send these books on together - in the same package.

Books arrived last week. I'm surprised that it didn't take more time to travel from USA to Finland. I have three ringbooks before these so it may take a while before I have time to read these, but I'll try to read these within a month.

I finally had enough time to read this book. I'm not sure what I think about this. It was interesting but many questions remaind open. Still it was interesting to read about Cap Veredean culture because it is so different than ours here in Finland.

This book is on its way to Katyan.

I think the back cover described this book very well, as this book was in a way humorous, but a little bit sad in a way...

"Germano Almeida uses a very sophisticated, humorous, but at the same time melancholic style and offers a miniscule inventory of daily life, of the social conventions and habits of Cape Verde..."

I was very happy to read this book from Cape Verde, thank you for sharing it, hobbit! And it was delightening to see, that already on the front cover was also the name of the translator, I didn't see that happening very often, even the translation can effect the text a lot, and also part of the enjoyment is given by a good translator.
This book will travel soon to piggeldy!

This book has not been rated.

The books arrived here safely, and I already started reading the other one :-)

Edit, June 23rd: I'm sorry to have to tell you that I gave up having read not even 40 pages :-( It seems so boring, and nothing promising is ever happening. Maybe I'll give Almeida another chance, though in a German translation.

This was not an easy read, during the first 50 pages I even considered to stop reading. I'm glad I didn't give in becaus the book turned out to be really good.
Almeida wrote a complex and balanced portrait of a difficult character and gave a little insight in life in Cape Verde/on the isles.

Thanks for sharing, hobbit! I've already got Abecedarian's address so the books can travel on tomorrow...

Part of Olympic Challenge (Cape Verde) - thanks Abecedarian and sending it on its way to ffortsa. I liked it but it was not my favorite. I think it was repeative at time and that was hard to sift through becuase even when it did repeat itself, I always learned more about the story.

oops - forgot to log in first. Sigh.

edited on Christmas Eve, 2006 - Just finished this small portrait of a somewhat pathetic life. AS sheepseeker said, it was tempting at first to stop reading, but after the first 50 pages or so it warmed up considerably. At first, you don't get a sense of the title character truly interacting with anyone; eventually he is revealed as a man who can harbor passions, however foolish or mishandled.

And I must confess I didn't know where the Cape Verde Islands were. They seem as forlorn, in the near-equatorial Atlantic, as the character of this book.

I've sent the first of this pair of books along to its next stop, Bartonz - this will go on Tuesday.

This book counts as Cape Verde for my Olympic Challenge. I really enjoyed it, but agree the end is unsatisfactory - I want to know what happened next! Crying out for a sequel! Will they find Adelia? What's so special about the book he's left her? Who will end up running the company? Will Carlos and Maria fall in love? I could go on....

I'm a fan of Cape Verdean music so it's nice to have a bit more insight into the place and culture it comes from.
