Third in the Sookie Stackhouse series.
"There's only one vampire Sookie Stackhouse is involved with (at least voluntarily) and that's Bill. But recently he's been a little distant--in another state, distant. His sinister and sexy boss Eric ha an idea where to find him. Next thing Sookie knows, she is off to Jackson, Mississippi to mingle with the under-underworld at Club Dead. It's a dangerous little haunt where the elitist vampire society can go to chill out and suck down some type O. But when Sookie finally finds Bill--caught in an act of serious betrayal--she's not sure whether to save him...or sharpen some stakes."

Well. I read the first two books in the Sookie series a while back, so I had to jog my memory a bit about the characters and the plot. Then I start this book and find that it takes place mere weeks after the second novel! Though Sookie and Bill seem to have such a "deep" connection, really, not that much time has passed for them.
While I really wanted to sock Sookie myself sometimes, because generally I think she was an idiot in this novel (although I do believe there's something about Southern sensibilities that is fundamentally different from anything I know, so I tried very hard to take that into account), the book was still well-written. Despite my being angry at Sookie, Harris still had me turning the pages. A cliche here and there, some get-out-of-jail-free cards once in a while, but otherwise an engaging read.

*SPOILERS*

I found Sookie to be very much NOT a tough chick in this story, instead being ruled by conflicting emotions and sexual desire to a point I found almost embarassing. At the end, though, she finally takes steps toward making change...but my prediction is that it won't last. I, personally, just do not understand her connection to Bill except that she can have sex with him because she can't read his thoughts. Is that really a great reason for a relationship? Just because she can have sex with him?! In this novel she meets a great guy (at least he didn't do any major betraying in this story, who knows what the next novel brings) that plays Scrabble with her (SCRABBLE! Who finds a guy to play Scrabble with them these days!!) and whose mind she can only slightly read because he is a Werewolf. Also he's rich and he likes her. Everything she deserves. Will it happen? Doubt it. After the trunk incident I just can't imagine why she would want to be in the same room with Bill, let alone be his girlfriend ever again. And still after that incident she lusts after him. Embarassing, I tell you!
