I picked up this book from my local used bookshop. It's short but from the cover and a quick glance, looks like it asks some deep questions about life, death, and desire.

7 out of 10

This was a quick read, although I think I may want to return to it and re-read it again someday, as it's the kind of book that I think would have different meanings for me at different times. On its face, it's a short, simple story of a boy who runs away to live by the sea with an itinerant fisherman, but there are some surreal touches and deeper messages.

Note: this book is filling the slot for a book by an author from Uruguay in my attempt at the "Olympic Challenge" - reading books by authors from all 202 countries that participate in the Olympics, in 2 years.

In honor of having read my 30th book out of the 202 needed for the Olympic Challenge, I've decided to send this around as a bookring to share with anyone who'd like to read it. I'll use this journal entry to keep track of the ring details.

Bookring Guidelines:

  1. Journal the books as soon as you get them. Contact the next person in the list for their mailing address.
  2. Please try to read within a month so the ring keeps moving. It's okay to use surface mail for overseas, though.
  3. When done, take a minute to journal your impressions and note that you're sending the book on. I love reading various people's feelings on books - we're bound to have different viewpoints!
  4. Yes, sometimes “life happens”. If you find yourself running behind or need to be skipped, etc., please PM me letting me know what’s up and we can work it out.

I stopped at the post office this morning and sent this to katyan (surface mail, sorry - I was doing quite a few at once). Please notice that although I said you're the only one in this ring, I just got a PM and added someone else after getting back from sending it.

I really liked this wonderfull story. Especially the love towards the sea was inspiring and touching at times. This was a story of inner growth but about love and finding yourself. Wonderfull!

"The sea never gets seriously angry, only occasionally on the surface."

I read this book as a part of myBook from every country in the world-challenge (Uruguay).

This was really quick to read. I didn't really like the book, but it was easy to read. Perhaps it was to fictional for me (at least in English).

Next this book will travell to USA.

The book arrived safe and sound in the US today after it's long trip from Finland. I am looking forward to reading it.

Another book I have read for the 5-5-5 challenge that I would not have read otherwise.

What a beautiful little book. The sea made me think free flowing thoughts like this when I was young and it was nice to revisit that world-it shouldn't be lost as we get busy with "real life". There is a great deal of symbolism and there are a lot "deep thoughts" in the book and I agree with hobbit that it could mean different things at different times in your life. Thanks for sharing it hobbit.

I will send the book home to hobbit when I receive the mailing address.

I returned from a business trip to find this book awaiting me, with a beautiful bookmark, made by Thursday5, tucked inside. Thanks! I'm very excited to receive it, as this is the first bookring I own that I've had return home.

In the meantime, I've had one additional request to be added (too late to have Thursday5 send to that person) so I'll see if there is enough interest to start a new ring.

I've also skimmed through the book and picked out a couple of interesting quotes to add to this journal entry:

"Don't worry about knowing your enemies, boy; get to know your friends."

"What does it mean to be a disciple, don Andres?"
"Do you instruct the sea?"
"No."
"Does the sea instruct you?"
"Yes."
"Then you are a disciple of the sea."

I've changed this to a ray, as I've had a chance to read this book again now, and would rather see it continue its travels.

This book arrived a day or two ago - thank you very much! I read it on the train this morning; it's short so it didn't take long to finish it. It's kind of like a cross between Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea and something by Paolo Coehlo. I like the descriptions of the sea and the child's voice was quite authentic. I was not entirely convinced by its attempts at philosophy or Christian allegory or the device of moving between reality and dreams. That's okay; it was pleasant enough to read and interesting. And now I've marked Uruguay off my five continents challenge!

I am sending teuffi a PM now and will send it on asap.

I have been a bad BookCrosser! I thought I had mailed this before my trip to Australia but I have returned to find it still sitting on my desk. I'm off to the post office now to rectify the situation. Sorry everyone!

Apologies, I have just realised I had not journalled this book yet.

I received this book around Christmas time and forgot to journal it at that point, and my computer let me down shortly after...

All is now back to normal and as it looks like I'm last on the list for this ring, I will contact hobbit and send the book back as soon as I have the address!

I like the parts describing the child's life however the 'philosophical' parts were definitely not for me!

Thanks hobbit for sharing!
