Book Description:
"No one is more suprised than Miss Jane Marple that her friend Carrie's sprawling country estate has been turned into a home for delinquent boys. What's more, Carrie's own children aren't thrilled at how their mother is squandering the family fortune. Then a brutal murder proves that philanthropy is the least of Carrie's problems."

Thank you, crimson-tide. Book arrived today, with very comforting bookmark:)

Edit 24/11/2006: Thank you, crimson-tide, I did enjoy the book. I had read the Finnish translation some years ago. Now I've read the book in English, too. This is one of my favourite Miss Marple stories. (i guess they are all my favourites.)

Edit 27/11/2006: Offering in Only Agatha Relay.

No one was interested in this book when relayed half a year ago. I guess every Christie fan has read this already. (Well, there is a new Christie fan born every minute, isn't there?.) Now this book is traveling as a surprise to ...

I picked up this book like “a pig in a poke” on the on the grounds of it’s first page (all the names and places were striked throuhg). I didn’t recognized this as a Christie (I thought altogether different writer), so this was a nice surprise. I have read lots of Christies, but for a long time I didn’t like the ones with Miss Marple. I have started to read “Marples”, but this one is a completely new acquaintance, so I’m looking forward to read this.

edit. Good old Agatha. Book was nice for summer reading.

Having watched one of the new Miss Marple tv adaptations just a week ago, I was tempted as soon as I spotted this in the "book buffet" at Kesäpäivät (the All-Finland meeting) yesterday. I can't remember whether I've read this one before, but if I have it was so long ago that I will surely not remember whodunnit!

Reminder to Self: I have promised to send this to PepperVL when I finish it, in exchange for "Gammage Cup".

I slightly ruined this read by constantly fretting that I was going to remember "whodunnit" from a television version! In the end, I *had* spotted one of the crucial clues, but I fear it was as much because of vaguely remembering seeing it on tv as it was me being clever. However, I also think I was conflating TWO different televised Agatha Christie mysteries, so at least that helped to throw me off the scent. But it was still frustrating and disconcerting to have these memories flitting past as I read.

I also got rather hung up on catching out Agatha in a mistake! As I posted to bookobsessed, In chapter 1 we're told that Carrie Louise's first husband (Gulbrandsen) died when she was thirty-two. It's implied that she was seventeen when they got married (or at least, they were in love by the time she was 17). Then chapter two starts by explaining that they were unable to have children, and "eventually" adopted a little girl, Pippa, who was two years old at the time. Almost immediately they did get pregnant, with Mildred. And now, page 18 in my copy, "Eric Gulbrandsen died when Mildred was fifteen and Pippa eighteen".

Surely this means Mildred must have been born when Carrie Louise was still only 17, right? I mean, I suppose it might depend a tiny bit of when their birthdays were, but basically... She fell in love with Gulbrandsen, got married, despaired of ever getting pregnant and "eventually" adopted a child, then got pregnant, AND gave birth... all in one year??!!? Is Christie's arithmetic (or world-knowledge?) off? Or was poor naive 17-year-old Carrie Louise (along with her 50-year-old already-a-father husband) just clueless about how many days it might take her to get pregnant?

Well, I've now posted the book to PepperVL (on 28/7, surface mail), so we'll see what she thinks of it.

8 out of 10

I enjoyed this, though I did for once have an inkling of who the real killer might be... though not why. :D And I read and re-read the first chapter to try to puzzle out the mistake, and all I could think of was that Christie just picked ages that sounded good... but it seems weird when she's so meticulous about all the other details.

Still, an enjoyable read.

Gammage Cup is still on Mount To Be Mailed, but never fear, it is reserved for you and should go out soon. :D
