I love Minette Walters and have been waiting patiently for this to come into paperback (although bigger size) and be a little cheaper so I could order it. That day has come and now I just have to get through some of my tbr pile and read it :)

I may make a bookring with this when I am done as it is on alot of wishlists.

-----------

From Amazon

Five women have been savagely killed in the Sierra Leone conflict. Connie Burns is a correspondent for Reuters who asks awkward questions about the arrest of three young soldiers accused of the crime. Their forced confessions (after savage beatings) count for little in the middle of the Civil War, and Connie's theory -- that the murders were committed by a foreigner indulging his own sanguinary fantasies in the middle of a war -- proves to be very dangerous for her. Her attempts to track the killer down bring catastrophe on her own head, and she is forced to escape, going to ground in Dorset and dealing with the psychic scars she has been left with. It is, of course, inevitable that she will be tracked down even in the safety of the English countryside by her implacable opponent.

Okay this may not have been the best Minette Walters book (imho) but it was good enough to keep me reading. During the first few chapters I thought I had made a mistake buying this book because I really couldn't understand where she was going with all the war talk. Finally the story started to pick up but I did fine keeping track of all the characters a little hard at some points.

All in all a good book and worth reading and I love Minette's style of adding emails etc. I won't say anything else though as I may give away too much.

I have decided to offer this book up as a bookring as a few people has this one on their wishlist and I am sure there are alot more Minette Walter fans out there!

I've finished it this night (between 4 and 5 am, to be precise ;-)). I agree with you, Amberkatze, it's probably not one of the best minette walters, but as usual, the characters are great, and their relationships are quite complex. I admit I have some reservation as to the way the "plot" ends, but it was a good read anyway !

thanks for the ring, Amberkatze !
Will send to Finland as soon as possible

8 out of 10

At first I was a bit reserved with this book, the story sounded a bit repulsive. But somehow I got hooked and couldn't stop reading. At times the story started to get boring but then something happened and it got my interest again. I wasn't totally happy with the ending but can't think of any other way that would have been more plausible. An entertaining read (and so much better than Fox Evil...), so thank you for sharing, amberkatze.

Have pm'd the next one in line and waiting for a reply.

Finshed this today whilst travelling too and from Birmingham to a course. I found it difficult to get into at the start..possible because I wasn't able to give it my full attention, but I do love train travel..as it's an ideal opportunity to get into a book. As with many of Walters books the main characters are flawed, oppressed and damaged, but there is always a spark of hope and redemption at the conclusion..Not one of her best for me, but stil a worthwhile read. I have Spiderchic's address and will get this off to her shortly..THanks as every to Amberkatze for sharing xxxx

Finished this last night. I really enjoyed it I love Minette Walters style of writing, with the emails added in tends to break it up and make it easier to read. Perhaps not one of her best novels but a little different. Have pm'd cloggy for their address.

Thanks for sharing!

Hm, I have to agree with previous journallers that this isn't Walter's best book by far. She seems to be all over the place with this one, the side strand of Lilly doesn't really work for me, the ending is too easy, too shallow.
It was still an interesting enough read, I just wished she had stuck with one type of novel or another, rather than this mishmash of styles and settings.

I've got Juni628's addy and will post tomorrow

After several starts and stops, I was finally able to dig into this. I have to agree with previous journallers that it was not one of the best of Minette Walters books. That said, I still enjoyed the book and felt it was a worthwhile read. Her characters are always interesting.

Have PM'd LastMango in order to keep this on it's way...

Finished this last night. I found it difficult to get into and was dissatisfied with the ending. However, the last half of the book was absolutely excellent and kept me wanting more. I think that's why I found the ending such a let down.

I currently waiting for Rhonnie's mailing info and then I will mail this off to Australia. c-a-m asked to be skipped.

I sent this book off on a slow boat to Australia today. I try to send by air mail whenever possible but I refused to give Canada Post $27+ to send this book off to Rhonnie. So I sent it surface (it still cost $12). The guy behind the counter says it will take 6 weeks. Sorry, but for $27 I could have bought a couple new books. I love bookcrossing but there is a limit.

I'm finished my rant now.

I hope Rhonnie enjoys the book when she receives it.

I have enjoyed all the other Minette Walters books I've read so am looking forward to it. Thanks again Amberkatze

This arrived safely in SW France today. I'm really looking forward to this. A friend of mine, another Minette Walters fan, loved it and can't wait for me to read it so we can discuss it. Thanks Amberkatz for starting this ring and Kleptokitty for mailing it safely on to me.

I loved this book! I think it's the best one she has written for a long time and had a hard time putting it down, so the walls in our study are only half painted!
I loved the flawed but strong characters, the very current story line concerning Iraq and other hot spots in the world and I specially loved the ending, very cleverly hidden between the lines.
This is definitely not the kind of story I would recommend for nervous people, living alone and reading late into the night! Lock the doors grab a big stick and hug your dogs.
Thank you so much for sharing this Amberkatze. It will be in the post tomorrow morning, on its way to Piggeldy in Germany.

Edit, June 2nd: Oh, I forgot to edit^^ I started reading last week, but I'm afraid it'll take the whole June to finish.
