In the eleventh century, in Persia, there lived a mathematician named Ghiyathuddin Abulfath Omar bin Ibrahim al-Khayyami--or, Omar, son of Abraham, the tent-maker. Omar wrote poetry, and while his rhymes received little attention in their day, they were rediscovered and translated into beautiful English--more than seven centuries later--by a gentleman and scholar named Edward FitzGerald. It was a meeting of minds, a great collaboration of the past and the present, and FitzGerald's rendition of those passionate verses has become one of the best loved poem cycles in the English language.

With their concern for the here and now, as opposed to the hereafter, Omar Khayyam's quatrains are as romantic today as they were hundreds of years ago; they are a tribute to the power of one moment's pleasure over a lifetime of sorrow, of desire over the vicissitudes of time. Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, presented here with Edward FitzGerald's original preface, is truly a classic, and it will stand forever as one of our finest monuments to love.

I have read the English version. It is an interesting poem, which is not always easy to understand. I am more into novels than into poems, but it has not put me off at all. I plan on finding a Dutch translation to compare it to the English and maybe appreciate it more. I am going to the library this afternoon and will also try to find out more about Omar Kayyam and the time he lived in. Iran (or Persia in his days) seems to me a very interesting country with a very old culture, that is worth investigating.

Thank you so much dutchbooky for sending this book to me. I‘m so happy! :)

And thank you airyaa for sending it from the homeland of Omar Khayyam and out to the world of bookcrossers.

I have only heard and read short quotes from Khayyam’s poems and I really want to read more.

Several years ago I read the book "Samarkand" by Amin Maluf, I liked that book and got very interested in this Persian poet Khayyam. (I told a woman who is born in Iran and she taught me to say Khayyam in a better way)

And now I am going to read this book and then I will give it to one of my BC-friends.

Thank you for this introduction to this poet!

I have really enjoyed reading those poems, even if they are hard to understand. I am thankful for the notes; they helped me understand more of the poems.
I managed to get a copy of “The Original Rubaiyyat of Omar Khayaam; A new translation with critical commentaries” by Robert Grave & Omar Ali-Shah

as a RABCK. I think this translation is much easier to understand and it also has a lot of explanations so I will now study that book and will send this book to a BC-friend.

I have seen that a garden centre sell the rose “Omar Khayyam”, they say it grows on his grave, maybe I buy it and plant it in my garden. I found a picture of that rose.

For me these poems was hard to understand, I needed time and had to read them several times. Thank you so much for giving me this experience, I really enjoyed reading the poems. This book is a treasure and I hope future readers will appreciate it and take good care of it.

Oops ... ! I've been forgetting to journal this book, it actually arrived on Saturday ... ! :-o It arrived in my mailbox along with another book, 'Daughters of the House', as a total surprise. Thanks, Tuttasb! What a well-travelled book - and it's come all the way from Iran, I'm impressed!! Of course I have heard about this poet and his work, but I've never read anything by him. It'll be interesting.

I've read this book now, April 22nd through 27th.

Not sure what to say ... Poetry really isn't my thing. I prefer novels and various types of nonfiction ... most other genres, in fact, rather than poetry. I know where you're coming from, dutchbooky. :-) I agree with Tuttasb that the poems are hard to understand. But partly that's because of me, I don't get poetry. It's extremely rare that I come across poetry that really speaks to me. I don't try all that often, no ... :-)

This was an interesting read though, I do feel that it's one of those books that everyone ought to have read. A classic of world literature and all that. So I am definitely grateful for the chance. And what a wonderfully well travelled book. This is what is so great about BookCrossing - it really connects people across borders, all over the world. :-) Thank you! :-)

Not sure what to do with the book now, but I'm sure I'll think of something. This book obviously likes to travel ... ! ;-)

It was a long while that I have received any books via the mail and it was a pleasant surprise. I got the book for quite a while but due to a bad cut of my right foot, I was out of 'commission'. It is also a great pleasure to be part of a book that is well traveled. Keeping it for awhile before I actually read it.
