I've decided I'm unlikely to read this again in the near future, so am going to ring it, as it is one of the 1001 books to read before you die

So the idea of a book ring is: - PM me to join and state your shipping preferences. - When I have at least 5 people, I'll (probably) post the book to the first person. - Please journal the book when it arrives and when you've sent it on. - When you've read it, please PM the next person on the list for their address. - Bear in mind other people want to read it, so don't put it at the bottom of your TBR pile (6 weeks is a reasonable timeframe imo)! - If you're last on the list, send it back to me when you're done. When I have enough participants I'll sort the order to suit as many people's postage preferences as possible. And the ring so far is: PeaMartian, UK Holystone, UK, CaterinnaAnna, UK, Post anywhere Taniazed, Aus, prefer Aus Chiboiler, USA, ship anywhere Angela 861, USA, ship anywhere GateGypsy, Canada, Ship anywhere (wants to be near the end of this ring)

Journal Entry 5 by Holystone from Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear United Kingdom on Saturday, October 27, 2007
Picked up at Meet up today. Apparently its on the list of 1001 books to read so I thought I would give it a go. The book is very small and so unfortunately is the print

Journal Entry 6 by Holystone from Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear United Kingdom on Monday, November 19, 2007
It was a bit of a struggle to read - small print and archaic language, but I did it. Did I enjoy it - well it made me think about history and those tv shows I watched in the 60's and 70's Robin Hood and Ivanhoe and made me wonder about what was actually true and what was fiction. It is a book of its time rather anti-semitic in parts

Journal Entry 8 by PeaMartian from Durham, County Durham United Kingdom on Thursday, November 29, 2007
Received safely by post from Holystone and going on to my TBR... I have a bit of a ring-stack at the moment (which is why this book went to Holystone before me), but hoping to get a full 2 weeks off over the holiday season to catch up... Will post on to CaterinaAnna when I'm done (probably early in the New Year)... Thanks for sharing!

Journal Entry 9 by PeaMartian from Durham, County Durham United Kingdom on Saturday, February 16, 2008
A quick JE just to let you know that this book has now finally made it to the top of my TBR. I started reading it a couple of weeks ago, and am nearly 200 pages in (still not even close to half-way)... I am enjoying the story and the style of writing, but tend to read on the bus to work or last thing at night, so the small font size makes it fairly slow going (the silver lining is that the book is therefore small enough for me to hold up to read at the end of a long day!). I'm hoping to find a few hours to curl up with the book this weekend, and then maybe finish it in the next 10 days or so...

Journal Entry 10 by PeaMartian from Durham, County Durham United Kingdom on Thursday, February 28, 2008
Well, it took me a while, but I have ow finally finished this book. I found it pretty tough going with the text being so small, and the book being so thick, that it felt more like a chore thana pleasure at times. Having said that, I really enjoyed the story and the characters, and I'm really pleased that I continued with it right through to the end. Maybe I hould just learn that I should only read big fat book during the holidays when I don't have other distractions and can really disappear into them..? Thanks for sharing! Will pop the book in the post to CaterinaAnna today...

Journal Entry 12 by Caterinaanna from Coventry, West Midlands United Kingdom on Saturday, March 29, 2008
The small text, thin paper and thickness of the book made me wonder what I'd let myself in for, but I ended up reading all of this curled up under the duvet the other weekend - sorry for the delay in journalling. The language is of its time, but suits the story so well that I find it hard to imagine an updated rendering having the same power. The identity of each of the mysterious characters was easy to deduce, but I wonder how much of that is from foreknowledge of the story and how much from the writing. The anti-semitism remarked on by Holystone was also of concern to the author, who makes it clear in his introduction that a reader could have imagined an alternative marriage at the end, but not a man of the time the book was set. (Yes, I read that bit too, and wished the edition had included the original introduction which was referred to in the one printed.) The hold the insipid Rowena maintained over Wilfred was the most incredible part of the novel for me as for the readers who had talked to Scott: the other events were unlikely to have occured, but at least they were consistent with the characters and the portrait painted of the time. In summary, I enjoyed this far more than I had anticipated doing and am looking forward to eventually reading the Waverley novels. Thank you suedo and those who have got this little volume around so far. I have PM'e Taniazed for her address.

Journal Entry 15 by ChiBoiler from Chicago, Illinois USA on Wednesday, April 30, 2008
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I imagine if I had had to read it in school, this would have been pure torture due to its length - almost 600 pages! However, I really liked it...I actually felt that Rebecca was more of the main character than either Ivanhoe or Rowena. Most of the characters were familiar friends from past stories...Brought up memories of trips to Nottingham (I have been there twice) to see Robin Hood!! (or at least a part of his history). Will be seeing angela861 on Friday and will pass this book on to her then.

Well... there were times when I thought my eyes would cross due to the small print but I did like the book. :-) I enjoyed the characters and am glad I had a chance to read it. I liked Rebecca and was glad her character had such a role. I'm glad I read it now and not 20 years ago... I wouldn't have appreciated it back then! I have GateGypsy's address and will mail it Monday or Tuesday.
