The Bathhouse
8 journalers for this copy...
The story begins with the arrest of a seventeen-year-old girl in the early days of the fundamentalist revolution in Iran. Imprisoned because of her brother's involvement with leftist politics, she is placed in a makeshift jail, a former bathhouse, in which other women are also held captive.
This story is fiction, but is based on interviews with women who'd been imprisoned. It's horrible, yet gripping and and touching.
The author is from Iran, but has moved to the USA.

Than you very much for the RABCK, hobbit!

Although this book sounds really interesting, and it gets really good reviews, I have decided not to read it after all. Eventhough it's been intriguing me for years and survived every survey of the pile TBR, the most recent reviews I read all mention torture and horrid evil. Although reading about that didn't used to bother me as much, nowadays I prefer not to read about such topics, interesting as they may be. This used to be right up my alley when it comes to interesting reads, no more though, sorry. I'll do my best to find a new, more appreciative reader for it.

I was caught by the photo on the front cover of the book, got interested in the title and then, after reading the text on the back, decided to take it home with me.
Thanks for releasing, Phoenix-Flight! It sure sounds interesting!

Wow.
What a book! To say that I loved it, may be a bit odd, considering the nature of the contents. But I did.
I couldn't put it down, was taken by this story of a young girl, taken prisoner an held for some time in The Bathhouse, that now serves as a prison.
It is horrible to read what she and other women go through. To read of smashed hopes, stoned women, shot men, of the tortures they are suffering and to have confirmed once again, how badly people can treat one another based on religious ideas.
But I'm glad I read it.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
This book is on its way for the first sentence VBB.
got it! thank you very much
A very interesting read. Following the fate of the protagonist and some of her fellow inmates in such an emotional manner was hard at times, but engaging throughout. The last secenes and especially the ending served as emphasis for the arbitrariness and meaninglessness of what the girl had to go through.
I would have liked a bit more background on the political and religious pretexts, but as the story follows a person oblivious to these things, the lack of information makes sense.

Hmm, I thought this was a ring or ray, but I can't really tell here. This has arrived in the rainy Swiss Alps, thanks so much for sending. It would be good to know if this needs to travel further because if there's no urgency it might linger a bit on my TBR pile. It looks like an interesting read.

I seem to be reading a run of fairly dire stories, so after this I've just picked up some potentially mindless chicklit.
For some reason I thought this was set in Afghanistan, and as that was the theme of the advanced EFL class I just taught, I wondered if this would be something to use in the future. It's not Afghanistan, but Iran, although scenes from the film Osama which my class watched were very reminiscent of the scenes described here.
I find I don't really have too much to say - I thought it was quite well-written in that the reader got a very strong sense of what the young girl was experiencing (although poorly edited- typos abound in the edition I have here as a bookcrossing ring), but ultimately it was so depressing. The powerlessness of the women held, the taunting of the guards... this is not an uplifting book, although it is essential that we know these things are still happening today. But is it enough to know?
I have the next address and will be posting this on soon.

Now on its way to Norway. Enjoy!
Or rather Sweden. ;)
Looking forward to reading it.
Looking forward to reading it.
In a way an easy read, with short chapters and only 137 pages altogether. On the other hand not an easy or a light read in any way, because of the inhumane brutality that it pictures. Well worth reading, either way.
Now moving on to Berlin!

Wow, that was quick! The book arrived today.
A very moving book. Quick read, but definitely not an easy book.
Off to the next reader in this bookring (lmarshall89)!
