Lessing is really good, I love her way with words. I read the book rather slowly, because I wanted to enjoy her writing. The story is so sad and it deals with a lot of issues, mainly rascism, I would say, but also with male and female roles. Both Mary and Dick tend to do what they believe is expected of them and that leads to disaster. The novel is so brilliantly written that I feel the heat in that awful little house.
