Memoirs of a Geisha (Vintage International)
3 journalers for this copy...
"Speaking to us with the wisdom of age and in a voice at once haunting and startlingly immediate, Nitta Sayuri tells the story of her life as a geisha. It begins in a poor fishing village in 1929, when, as a nine-year-old girl with unusual blue-gray eyes, she is taken from her home and sold into slavery to a renowned geisha house. We witness her transformation as she learns the rigorous arts of the geisha: dance and music; wearing kimono, elaborate makeup, and hair; pouring sake to reveal just a touch of inner wrist; competing with a jealous rival for men's solicitude and the money that goes with it."
I was reading another copy of this via a bookring. I had left my copy at home and stopped in a Starbucks for coffee, saw this copy on the bookshelf, and swiped it so that I could continue reading while on the road. Now I'd like to pass it along to someone else to enjoy as much as I did.

Sending to brewski via bookrelay. Enjoy! :')
I received this in the mail today. Thanks, I am looking forward to reading this very soon.
Hehe, I lent this to my Mom too for her trip back to California after her Xmas-time visit. I guess I will get it back and read it the next time I go there or she comes back to visit again.
Got this back from my Mom when she was up visiting in September 2007. I will have to remember to ask her how she liked it.
Anyhow, I picked this book off of my massive Mt. TBR for guinaveve's 2007 Keep Them Moving Challenge since I was thinking of sending it on to another BookObsessor as a wishlist RABCK once I finish :)

This was an interesting and eye-opening novel into the world of the geisha. There was a good amount of detail used in describing the process of becoming a geisha and then the everyday life of a geisha. The story and the writing were well paced and well written throughout and also very much had the feel of a memoir.
I am setting this aside as a surprise for someone :)

Mailed yesterday.
Thanks Bruce, I'm so excited to read this! I have quite a bit to read at the moment, so I'll have to add this to my TBR pile.... BUT, that being said, I promised my best friend I'd visit him while he's living in Florence, Italy this year... and we've done a ton of last minute arranging over the past couple days... and it looks as though I'll have a semi-long commute to the the States this weekend, and a long commute to Europe on Monday morning... then the whole thing in reverse the following Tuesday. So, reading time might be in good supply (especially if I don't have window seats!) and I might get to this quicker than expected :) Thanks again!
I took this book to Italy with me, but it's back in Canada now. I started reading it on my trip, but I just finished it, and i've been back in Canada for a little while. I've been really sick since I got home, and I've been sort of reading this when I've been able... anyway, now that I'm through it, I must say that I agree with Bruce's comments. I'm really glad to have read this, and now it's going on the move again... back to Florence! I'm sending it to my friend over there, who has just joined bokcrossing... I'm not sure if he's too interested in this one or not, but I know at least one of his flatmates was... so someone in Italy will read it next.
Thanks again, brewski!
