Mastulela thank you so much! This is on my list (hat I'm forcing myself to stick to over the coming months so I look forward to getting to it soon.

Oh shoot. I really wanted to like this book. Mark Twain quotes are a stock part of my daily conversation and I love his short stories but I just could not get into this book no matter what. I think it was mainly due to the narrative being another first-person male which, frankly, I've had enough of lately. The whole 'adolescent boy' thing - you know, let's be robbers, let's follow the trail of our fathers (or not as the case may be), just doesn't seem to do it for me anymore.

As a friend recently said to me of Catcher in the Rye: "Unless you're fourteen - and a boy - you tend to read it and think 'grow up'". On this occassion, at least I didn't think Huck was whining in a way that suggested he needed to grow up but I do think that you need to be fourteen and a boy (or at the very least to have once *been* a fourteen year-old boy) to appreciate it. And I never was. More is the pity.

So, I think my dislike of this book (and my eventual dismissal of it) is probably more to do with my lack of understanding rather than poor writing. But either way, it wasn't a new favourite.
