Registered as part of the 3 million challenge.

Her white face, beautiful, unmarked by any flaw of skin or feature, stared blankly back at him. He fancied that she had cringed, her slim body pressing further into the wall behind her. He didn't speak. He had never known how to talk to women. There was only one ting he had been able to do to women, and, advancing now, smiling, he did it.

Then, when it was all over, he straightened her against the wall so that she would be ready to die for him again. It was the best thing in his life, just knowing she was there, waiting until the next time...

But one day she wasn't waiting, wasn't there...

Mixed feelings about the book. It's really easy to read with a lot of suspense but I didn't like the way in which Ruth Rendell succeeds in making me almost sympathise with Arthur !!! While reading I was thinking : "you can't like this character, he's a serial killer !"
I didn't like that but I think Rendell is very talented. And in fact I enjoyed the book quite a lot. I don't know if I make myself clear. I just mean that the main character of the book is a maniac, a psycho and as a reader, it was as if I had to understand, to connect with his life and accept his murders. Obviously enough, as a human being I can't understand him. Very twisted journal entry for the first book I read of Ruth Rendell ;-)
Thanks for sharing. It was a reading experience...
Let's see now if the other readers can see my point or explain these feelings better than me ;-o

Not a bad book. It read fast. I would have liked a little more mystery rather than knowing who did the killing. I wasn't too happy with how it ended either. It wasn't to predictable but I think it could have been better.

Will send off ASAP.

It is a masterpiece, in my opinion; very well written.
A great depiction of a troubled mind.

A very well written book. I agree with bibi, you can''t help feeling sorry for Arthur, even though he is a serial killer, he didn'' have a very good start in life but I suppose that''s no excuse for killing people!!
