Romantic, heroic, comic and tragic, unconventional schoolmistress Jean Brodie has become an iconic figure in post-war fiction. Her glamour, freethinking ideas and manipulative charm hold dangerous sway over her girls at the Marcia Blaine Academy - the 'creme de la creme' - who become the Brodie Set, introduced to a privileged world of adult games that they will never forget

I remembered the name of the author from the 1001 books to read before you die list and since it was on sale I bought it.

This book left me somewhat confused. I found the story of the teacher and her girls fascinating and I liked Sandy's flash-back way of telling the story. But still, I found some of the passages extremely dull and when I read some of the book onboard a train I nearly fell asleep.

I'm sorry it took me so long to finish this book, but this was one of the most dull and boring books I have ever read. After having read The Driver's Seat by the same author, I had higher expectations for this one. I did not feel sympathy for any of the characters, and the story almost made me fall asleep several times. The only reason why I continued reading is because it is a 1001-book, and that it is only 128 pages long. But, I sincerely do not think that it deserves a place in the 1001-list.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Thank you for the opportunity to read this book. I didn't enjoy it as much as "the drivers seat" but all the same worth reading. A quiet story. Sometimes I had a hard time keeping concentrated although it just consists of 128 pages.

Now it travels...

I really enjoyed reading this book, Muriel Spark has packed
so much into such a short book.

It is a story of an eccentric teacher who inspires cultlike reverence in her young students. The novel explores themes of innocence, betrayal, and cold rationality opposed to unchecked emotionalism.
The story of Miss Brodie's ultimate downfall is told from the unsympathetic perspective of one of her students.

I have a feeling it is a book I will want to read again and that I will get something really different out of it the next time.

Now I have read two books by Muriel Spark and I add her to my favorite authours.

On its merry way to the next bookcrosser.

I liked this book. A lot.
Sure, no action thriller by any means, but dull I wouldn't say. I even had to read it just one more time before I could force myself to actually part with it.
I think it's a fascinating portrait of gullible girls and an egocentric teacher, and later on not so gullible girls turning on the teacher, seeing her for who she really is. A story about maturing, growing, and people who just never mature in spite of growing up.

Arrived yesterday; thank you!

I loved the feeling of British school in the book - books about British schools always make me feel sorry that I had to go to an ordinary Swedish school, although in reality I am not.
I did not really understand the end of the book, it seemed too quick in comparison with the rest of the book, where there are a lot of repetitions, and I am not quite certain if there is an underlying meaning which has escaped me.
The political side of Miss Brodie, I find, is not consistent. One one hand she seems intent on creating "Übermenschen" in wanting to make her set special, but on the other hand she seems to favor individualism. Anyway, her admiration of the fascists and nazists transpires early in the book, and is no surprise.
