Dick Francis was a riding before he could walk, and after he retired from racing, wrote mysteries set in the racing world. This one involves racing only peripherally, as it deals with the wine and liquor sold in racing circles. Tony Beach has a wine shop and is supplying a racing party when disaster occurs. Several of the guests are killed and he is drawn into the investigation as a civilian expert. The story is exciting and moves quickly. It mixes wine, whiskey, and horses in an intoxicating mixture.
