Susannah and Bethlehem are runaways. Susannah is an orphan sent to live on a southern plantation with her uncle and aunt. She wants to go home. Bethlehem is a slave. She wants to be free. They decide that there is a better life waiting for them in the North. A life without horrible rules and beatings. A place where they can be best friends, no matter what. But their journey is not going to be easy. They've got to travel from Virginia to Vermont - on foot. The only thing that keeps them going is the promise of a new life. The promise of freedom. |

I read this book and found it very moving. I just had to keep reading so that I could find out what happened in the end. The only part that I didn't like was the format and that the narrator of the story changes back and forth between the two girls. Only they are now grandmother age and telling the story so that it can be written down for generations to come. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that style of writing it is just a personal preference of mine that "I" always refers to the same person. It makes it easier for me personally to follow a story. The end of their childhood journey was just a bit abrupt for my tastes but I loved reading of their adventures along the way. An unlikely pair of friends make for an interesting tale. |
