I picked this up at the Ramstein Air Base (GERMANY) Thrift Shop that is run by the Ramstein Enlisted Spouses' Association. I can always find some interesting books at a good thrift shop.

From the back cover:

Susannah and Bethlehem are runaways. Susannah is an orphan sent to live on a southern plantation with her uncle and aunt. She wants to go home. Bethlehem is a slave. She wants to be free. They decide that there is a better life waiting for them in the North. A life without horrible rules and beatings. A place where they can be best friends, no matter what.

But their journey is not going to be easy. They've got to travel from Virginia to Vermont - on foot. The only thing that keeps them going is the promise of a new life.

The promise of freedom.

I read a different copy of this book sometime back and these were my comments at that time.

I read this book and found it very moving. I just had to keep reading so that I could find out what happened in the end.

The only part that I didn't like was the format and that the narrator of the story changes back and forth between the two girls. Only they are now grandmother age and telling the story so that it can be written down for generations to come. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that style of writing it is just a personal preference of mine that "I" always refers to the same person. It makes it easier for me personally to follow a story.

The end of their childhood journey was just a bit abrupt for my tastes but I loved reading of their adventures along the way. An unlikely pair of friends make for an interesting tale.

When I got the last bookbox I decided that I needed to record the entire journey of each book in the box and that includes it passing through my hands. I mean how else would one know that the book has been all the way to Germany and how do I know whatever became of the poor books that I didn't choose? I have my reasons for choosing or not choosing a book but maybe it is "just the book" for someone else and that it was fate that I passed it up.

I am journaling each of the books and I will be releasing them to the bookbox which has been a very useful practice in several of the other bookboxes I have participated in.
