To me this book reads like a sitcom that had a really good formula for its first series but which has now run out of steam because the original basic premise has become tired and predictable. The idea in the first book that pursuer and pursued actually need each other was a brilliant one, but the whole basis of sitcom is that there is a situation that can never be resolved. We know that Stephanie and Joe are a natural pair, and that if they ever consummate their relationship there's nothing left, so how do you sustain interest?
In this book we have a good premise - pillar of the community has a dark secret life - probably enough to support a short story. The rest is backstory (an irritating thing with series if it's not well-handled), slapstick, and subsidiary stories that have no connection with the main thread (like the ridiculous episode of Stephanie's orange hair). Also, I really don't think I want to know the details of what Stephanie is wearing every time she's on the chase, unless it's relevant,
I know others love the Stephanie Plum books, but after this I realise that they are not for me. I'm glad I tried them but I don't think I'll be pursuing the series.
