I LOVED this book! What a fantastic story! I realize the *method* that is used for time-travel is a little (okay, a lot) hokey and uninspired but Si's adventures in 1880 were great! This was the first book I read in 2007 and it was a great way to start the year!

One thing that I found particularly interesting was how much I learned about 1880 but also the glimpse of 1970...for example, no one curses in this book they only say 'crysake' or how Si says typewriters will never catch on because they lack 'personal touch' but hel-lo, e-mail!
Also, the reference about 'swatting' the nurse's bottom and how she'good naturedly swings out of the way'...first of all, obviously a male's perspective, but also the accepted standard in 1970 right? I doubt any female would have written that as such a small, off hand comment, plus today that kind of thing isn't taken lightly.

I'm looking forward to the sequel! And I'll be passing this on to AceofHearts as part of the (long ago) non-genre swap on bookrelay!

What a lovely book. Si Morley is a bored illustrator working in advertising in 1970s New York when he is approached by a top-secret government team. They want him to travel back in time to San Francisco before the 1906 earthquake. Si convinces the team to allow him to travel to 1882 New York and witness the mailing of a letter.

The letter is a piece of his girlfriend's history which involved a rich ancestor who committed suicide. Si travels back to a more gentler time and embarks on solving the mystery of the missing words in the letter and the subsequent sequence of events. At first Si is not allowed to interact with anyone lest he change anything in the future but as he travels back several times he does interact with the people. Will the future be changed?

This book is a great combination of science fiction, romance, historical fiction and mystery. I simply loved it!!!!

Simon Morley, or Si, leads a boring life as an illustrator in the 70s. He feels like there's something more out there for him and knows that to be the case when he is contacted by an unknown man to be part of a "project". Without fully knowing what it is, Si agrees and finds himself in the middle of a time travelling experiment. The board of directors of this experiment wants Si to go to San Francisco before the big earthquake, but Si has a selfish time chosen out for himself. New York of 1882 to see a letter delivered that his girlfriend has kept for a very long time.

Si has to learn all of the tricks of time travel and eventually makes it back. He's asked to go back a few more times to see if events in the present are different when he comes back and to learn the history about some of the men he meets in the past.

The premise of this book is quite interesting but the real charm of the book lies in the story telling of 1882. Si meets the people of the time and grows close to some of them, experiencing life as he would back in that time. However at the start of the book, it took me a while to figure out what was going on and why. I'm sure the time travel part of the book could have been a bit better thought through.
