I really enjoyed this book! It is so funny and so helpful when raising a child of any age. Dr. Weinberger has a great outlook on life and has created an ideal situation when it comes to a pediatrician's office. A utopia of sorts.

His funny anecdotes about becoming a doctor, his family life, and his hilarious yet serious patients really make for a great read.

I am starting a bookray for this book! It's too fun and helpful not to share with others who will appreciate it!

What’s a bookray and how does it work?

A bookray is when a book passes from person to person based on the list of members involved. Preferably a bookray book is never released into the wild.

To join this bookray (or any other bookray of mine) please private message me. I will be glad to add you to the list. New members are added all of the time so be sure to check the list of participants before you mail the book to the next in line just in case!

Once you are a bookray member you will receive the book from the person listed before you. When you receive the book please make a journal entry stating that you’ve received it. Then read it as soon as you can (no absolute hurry, just be reasonable please :o), and journal again with your thoughts. You’ll then need to private message the person on the list after you for their address. Mail the book by media mail (it’s cheaper!), and make release notes on the book only if you’d like to. Then sit back and watch the continuing journey!

The members are as follows:

Leilaht (journaled)
kbgoffe (journaled)
shellyann (journaled)
eireannaigh(journaled)
loopy1(journaled)

I got this a couple of days ago. I must have had a blonde moment. I thought I had journaled this. Haven't had a chance to read it yet. they called me back to work.

I may have to buy a copy of this book. I was expecting just another parenting book with the usual psychobabble, but this is the story of Dr. Weinberger's practice. He throws in stories about his family too. Using stories to give parenting principles makes it much easier to remember and do. The fact that he has a good sense of humor helps too. I will be sending it on tomorrow if I get the address.

This book just arrived in the mail today. Looks cute. I am currently reading another bookray book, "The House of Blue Mangoes." Once I am done with it I can start on this book. Thanks!

This book was just delightful to read. I finished it yesterday while in the surgical waiting room at a local hospital. It was hard at times not to just start laughing out loud there. I am sure glad I read most of the book at home. This was just a great book. Thanks for sharing this book!

Journal Entry 7 by shellyann from Rifle, Colorado USA on Thursday, June 19, 2003

Journal Entry 8 by shellyann from Rifle, Colorado USA on Tuesday, July 1, 2003
Funny book-I found myself relating to the amusing stories he told. I wish I had had a pediatrician like that for my kids.

Journal Entry 9 by eireannaigh from Valley Center, Kansas USA on Tuesday, July 15, 2003
I got this in the mail today. Sounds like it might be a very fun book.

I too need to purchase a copy. I think we are going to try the dutch door thing with my son. Thank you for included me. Oh, and I duct tape my son's diaper on, if I don't he takes it off a pees on the floor.

Off on sat.

Journal Entry 11 by loopy1 from Herne Bay, Kent United Kingdom on Saturday, September 20, 2003
This book arrived this morning, and from just the prologue which I sneaked a look at in bed and over breakfast I'm going to enjoy it :-)
Thanks guys for sharing - I see I'm last on the list, so if no-one has any objections I'll probably offer it up again as a ray.

Journal Entry 12 by loopy1 from Herne Bay, Kent United Kingdom on Tuesday, September 23, 2003
A very entertaining, sensible book. I found myself sneaking glances through the day, and finished it by the evening. I certainly recognised my family in there - the adolescence, the sibling relationships, the middle child, the child ruling the roost... :-)
As to the Dutch door idea, we used to put a safety gate across the children's bedroom door when they were younger, and as to the duct tape it seemed a very reasonable solution to me :-)
I've posted a message on the bookray forum offering this book up again, and there's already interest from the UK mailing list.

Sorry about the delay in journalling! Looks like I'm going to have to send this one straight onto chelseagirl as I don't want to hold the ray up any more than I already have.

Journal Entry 15 by Mojorisin2 from Stevenage, Hertfordshire United Kingdom on Friday, October 24, 2003
Finally sent this one on to chelseagirl. A big thank you to you for letting me keep this one that extra week, I found this to be a joy of a book.

Book arrived safely this morning, I'm looking forward to reading this and will hopefully get on to it by the weekend!

Journal Entry 17 by chelseagirl from Faringdon, Oxfordshire United Kingdom on Thursday, October 30, 2003
A very easy read and full of funny, amusing and sometimes sad stories about the child patients Doctor Wienberger has treated. I wish my doctor was like him - he is so understanding of the trials and traumas of parenthood, and has some sensible realistic advice.

I read this in a day and enjoyed it - although some of the US medical terms were somewhat confusing - I can handle "diapers" and "pacifiers" but what on earth is this "mononucleosis" that just about every child seems to suffer from?!

Released on Monday, November 03, 2003 at In the hands of Royal Mail! in Postal release, England United Kingdom.

Posted to weebly as part of a ring. Hope the strike doesn't hold it up too much!

Journal Entry 19 by jalna from Wrexham, Wales United Kingdom on Wednesday, November 5, 2003
The postal strike didn't hold it up at all and it has arrived safely with me on 5 November.

"Hang on!" I hear you cry, "you're not Weebly."

True.

In view of her positive statement that she posted it to Weebly, I can't see how to save Chelseagirl's blushes here - sorry, but she boobed!! Put 2 books in 2 envelopes, put 2 labels on ... er, on the wrong envelopes!

Well, we're all human and if that isn't the Karma of BookCrossing I don't know what is!

My first thought was "I definitely don't want to read *that*!" but then I flipped a few pages and dipped in here and there and decided I might well read it, if I can manage to fit it in before the rest of the Ray start foaming at the mouth and sending me threatening PMs because it's been held up so long.

And by the way, I don't know about Duct Tape, but I did once put the dog's collar and lead on my nephew because my dog could be relied on to sit and stay on command: my nephew couldn't!

Journal Entry 20 by jalna from Wrexham, Wales United Kingdom on Friday, November 14, 2003
Just finished reading it and will be sending it on to Weeby very soon - probably not do-day because the weather is foul!

I didn't read any Baby & Childcare books when my children were little because I was very confident in my own views and didn't reckon much to other people telling me what to do, but this one would have suited me. I found the light, anecdotal style easy and pleasant to read and the advice was very sensible, on the whole, in my not-so-humble opinion. Although it is very obviously American, it still has plenty of revelance for all parents, I think.

By the way, Chelseagirl, mono (mononucleosis) is most commonly referred to as Glandular Fever in the UK.

Journal Entry 21 by jalna from Wrexham, Wales United Kingdom on Tuesday, November 18, 2003
The book is now back on course and heading on it's way to Weebly, as of to-day. (Gosh! - what blind faith I have in Royal Mail.)

Journal Entry 22 by weebly from Hartwell, Northamptonshire United Kingdom on Thursday, November 20, 2003
Received from Jalna - looking forward to reading it within the next week.

26/11 - Having lent the book to my friend over the weekend while I finished my Philip Pullman, I then couldn't put the book down when it was returned.

My hubby has also dipped into the book and says he now feels we did the right thing when we practised 'comtrolled crying' on our kids when they were small. That was leaving them to cry in the night when they woke up, and after a few days they gave up waking up. I seem to remember giving my son water in a bottle not milk in the night too - he soon thought waking up for water was not worth the trouble and started sleeping through.

I am now soooo looking forward to the adolescent stage (not) seeing as my eldest is 8 in a month.

This is heading out tomorrow to my old friend semetic ghost !!!

Found this when I got home from the weekend - it looks fabulous!

[later]

Just finished this - a bit like James Herriot, only less funny and more instructive. A light, educational read.

[update]

Still waiting on hearing back from Marianfrench for her address [4.12'03].

[last update]
Posted out to WistfulDragon today [8.12'03], with the plea to contact Marian again once she's finished, in case Marian's on holiday.

I found the book in my porch when I got home last night, and have already read half of it! I only wish I had discovered it when my first was born, rather than when my children range from 6 to 11. There is still a lot of useful advice in it though, as well as an opportunity for a nostalgic look back. The warmth and humour of this book make it eminently readable though, even if you don't have children of your own - and it might make you more sympathetic with those of us who do! Will try for Marianfrench's address and also that of Theresa-A, just in case.

It was two years ago today, that I was lying in the hospital bed reading this book, waiting on my second son to be born (today's his 2nd birthday...sigh...). The nurses and my midwife commented on the title and thought it was so funny!

I am so pleased the book has travelled like it has. And that the overall response is that everyone has enjoyed it! It's so cool to see my book floating over the continents!

Journal Entry 29 by MarianFrench from Buxton, Derbyshire United Kingdom on Thursday, January 22, 2004
Excellent book - I really enjoyed it. It would be great for any parent of children, no matter what age really. It's full of common sense advice and tips as well as being entertaining.

I have PM'd Theresa-A a couple of times but had no response so I'm going to mail the book off tomorrow, to bookmaniac70, in Bulgaria.

The book is already here.I have two children- 5.1/2 y/o and 16months old.Never mind for parenting of what age is the book,I`m always interested in parenting stuff...besides,I have a friend who has a baby of 2 weeks right now,so maybe I shall pass some stories to cheer her up:-)).
Thanks for sending the book so far,I enjoy seeing a lot of journal entries about it.I shall add mine ASAP!

Just dropping a note that I`m reading slowly the book.I received several bookrings at once,so I`m reading 2-3 books at the same time....

I`m slightly irritated by something in the book...It seems to me that the problems he encounters in his practice, are resolved too quickly, only with a piece of advice. It sounds like giving a bunch of quick recipes which,of course, always work.I don`t know if you had the same feeling at some points...For example, the depressed mother who is advised to dress up nicely every morning...Although dressing up may have positive effect for depression, I deeply doubt it took only this to heal.Perhaps he wanted to be brief in his book, not to elaborate too much and to include more examples...but still it sounds unrealistic to me.

Journal Entry 32 by bookmaniac70 from София / Sofia, Sofiya Bulgaria on Thursday, February 19, 2004
Well,I got used to Weinberger`s style and am not irritated anymore.I think that he really wanted to have as many stories as possible.I like that everything in the book is taken from his everyday practice. There are many stories I laugh at,and others make me sad.I was upset about the story of the autistic child whose mother didn`t want to recognise his problem and didn`t allow his treatment to to continue.
It is interesting also to see how parents look in doctor`s eyes during the visits.

Journal Entry 33 by bookmaniac70 from София / Sofia, Sofiya Bulgaria on Monday, March 1, 2004
I finished it some days ago.Being somewhat reserved at the beginning,I left the book with excellent impressions.I liked the wide range of problems covered in the book,as well as the combination of humour and serious issues.I didn`t learn many new things but was thankful for being reminded of some parenting truths which are easy to forget in everyday life.

I want to move the book along,I PM-ed Pica-miolos but haven`t got a reply so far.Tonight I`m sending a second PM.

I really liked the sensible, balanced advice from Norman Weinberger. He's the kind of doctor I'd love to have - very child-centred, from putting little animals onto the stethoscope so kids weren't nervous about it, to sending anxious parents home with chicken soup recipes.

It's also telling about how the idea of "parenting", and all the anxieties associated with it, is a relatively recent concept. I'm giving this a score of 7, however, because I really wasn't that interested in his descriptions of setting up a practice - it was the case histories that I found more entertaining!

Thanks for the book, I'm PMing tsmith51632 to send it on.

No response from tsmith, PMing casualreader.

Edited to add: I can't see how to send PMs to Casualreader: I'll ask on the message boards but if not, will PM the next person.

No response from tsmith51632, and I can't reach CasualReader ... now PMing glade1. I loved the book, but am moving to Darwin on Tuesday and don't want to take it with me if I can help it!

Edited to add that glade1 asked to be skipped, I'm now contacting the next person.

Somebody must want this book! I leave Darwin on a Greyhound bus on Wednesday and would like to have it posted off, so I have room for new reading material on the journey. Argh!

PM'd JesseBC for the second time ... and the next person in line, caligula03, just in case. gosh, this is a frustratingly heavy hardback to be travelling across Australia with, I leave Broome for Exmouth on Tuesday and really want to have this posted away by then. Please! Somebody! Take the darned book!

Finally, after 2 months, some interest! (I can't believe it's taken this long for someone to claim it - and I can't believe how many kilometres this book has travelled with me! I'm living in Perth now!) Just waiting for Izzati's address - I'll send this off soon. Sorry for my endless journal entries ... but this book has been weighing on me and luggage like an albatross around my neck.

Journal Entry 40 by Izzati on Friday, June 29, 2007
I received this book today in my office. Safe & sound. And it's in Penang, Malaysia now.
Thanks pfsahm for started this ray & thanks freesia for sending this book to me.
Wow! Can you believe it...It's been almost 4 years after I registered to join this ray. This book really travels more than we all thought of. I'll pm the next person before I finish this book. If there's no answer, I will offer this book as bookray in the forum so this book will continue it's journey.

Will journal again after I've finish reading.
