This story is absolutely beautiful. A friend gave me this book last year and it has patiently waited for me to read it. Once I started I couldn't stop and finished it in two days.

from inside cover:

Everything seems to be going wrong in Summer's life, yet she's a woman who is luckier than she knows.

A dancer turned schoolteacher, she is still recovering from the injury that ended her promising career in the arts. Her love, Nicholas, fears she's depending on him to fulfill her remaining dreams and hopes. And, most ominously of all, her cherished brother, Todd, is slowly dying.

In the tranquil suburbs of Ohio, Summer's days will be consumed in long hours of watching and waiting...watching a terrible disease claim Todd's body, and, of course, waiting for the inevitable.

As these difficult days crawl forward, she will come to terms with life, death, relationships, and her father's enigmatic, long-ago injunction to "travel light." Through her brother's guidance and example, she will teach her students the lessons that come with life's unsolicited and most intense moments. And watching her brother share both his struggle and his joy with his partner, Jacob, Summer will witness love in its most perfect, truest form...and learn how such a love transcends all illness, distrust, and the cruelty of time.

But it will be when she tries to fulfill the promise her brother exacted from her long ago, a promise born of a bond that only siblings can forge, that Summer will meet her greatest challenge - and realize how truly fortunate she is.

A tale of passion is an unfamiliar place, TRAVELING LIGHT takes you on a journey from tragedy to acceptance and love. And as it transforms Summer and her family, it will transform you, too.

I started reading this book because of curiosity... I just had to know. With the intention of reading a few pages I read a few more and a few more, soon I was hooked. What an amazingly beautiful story... truly breathtaking.

Thank you so much Lauraloo29! My Grandma's been in the hospital for the last 4 weeks, and passed away a few days ago, after deciding to stop being treated 2 days earlier, so I had completely forgotten that you had emailed me saying you had a book on my wishlist. It was so nice coming home from helping organise everything to a bit of BC goodness.

I'm really sorry, I tried and tried to get in to this, but just couldn't. They style of writing just didn't appeal to me at all. I hope the next reader enjoys it more!

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Story of a family supporting their son and brother to die, with side stories of the other siblings relationships and other tribulations. Prejudice and the fears people have about homosexuality and HIV / Aids are also explored.
The prejudice made this feel dated but perhaps these fears and phobias still flourish.

Well written story with well developed characters, although I did not warm to Summer, the main character, much. Beware as the subject matter is confronting and intensely described it is written in such a way that I felt compelled to read on.
Definitely worth reading.

Way behind on my journaling, I read this book weeks ago. A little dated now, but I certainly remember all the general fear with the AIDS epidemic. This was a story which explored what love really is and particularly the love between siblings as Summer helped care for her dying brother.
A heart wrenching story which I could not put down, and which brought me to tears on occasion.

I have not read anything by this author before but I thought it was beautifully written. Summer thinks everything is going wrong with her life, she had a promising career as a dancer until she suffers an ankle injury, so she has turned to teaching, where she is still finding her feet. Her gay brother Todd is dying, and it is heart wrenching watching him suffer, alongside his partner Jacob. Her lover Nicholas wants her to marry him, but she is not sure, she loves him, but feels she needs to establish herself first. It certainly brought me to tears.
