Synopsis (from Amazon.co.uk):

Berlin, 1942 - When Bruno returns home from school one day, he discovers that his belongings are being packed in crates. His father has received a promotion and the family must move from their home to a new house far away, where there is no one to play with, and nothing to do. A tall fence running alongside stretches as far as the eye can see and cuts him off from the strange people he can see in the distance. But Bruno longs to be an explorer and decides that there must be more to this desolate new place than meet the eye. While exploring his new environment, he meets another boy whose life and circumstances are very different to his own, and their meeting results in a friendship that has devastating consequences.

How to describe this book? well, first of all it is the first book in a very long time that has actually made me cry. this short story (about 200 pages) hooks you in from the first page, and i read it in a single afternoon. oddly enough, although i immediately knew *what* (and where) the story was about, i didn't see the ending coming. it was only in the last few pages that it suddenly dawned on me what was happening to Bruno, and it was with complete horror that i read on...just wanting to reach into the book and stop the inevitable ending from coming.
This will go down as one of my best reads of 2006, and has effected me like "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" did.

ETA: I am posting this out to my secret Valentine, since she has been very cheeky and obtained books from her wishlist before the 14th (making the one i already sent her a duplicate!). Naughty, naughty, naughty ;-)
As this was recently added to her wishlist, I hope she enjoys it!

Cats-eye my darling cupid! I am SO overwhelmed by all these gifts *blush* and especially this fantastic book. I heard a review of it on the radio and dashed straight to my wishlist, I am so excited about it.

Also, it wasn't my fault! I DID cross the other book off, but because my boyf bought a copy in the charity shop - but I've not read it so I can read YOUR copy and pass it on xxxx And I'm getting a copy from Hoser as well I think *blush* I've messed up!

Oh my days I am totally agreeing with you cats-eye. What a fantastic book, I cried and that is so rare. I'm going to put it into the YBS#12 cos it's so good but I'm trying to get my boyf to read it first ;-)

I had let my niece borrow this and found it at her house. Unfortunately, one of my students told me the ending beforehand so I didn't cry, but it is unexpected nonetheless. This is a great book and a quick read as well. Bruno is such an endearing kid and I look forward to watching the movie now! It will be put in my classroom library next!
