From the back:
Having Survivied World War I, Fidelis Waldvogel returns to his quiet German village and marries the pregnant widow of his best friend, killed in action. With a suitcase full of sausages and a master butcher's precious knife set, Fidelis sets out for America. In Argus, North Dakota, he builds a business, a home for his family - which includes Eva and four sons - and a singing club consisting of the best voices in town. When the Old World meets the New - in the person of Delphine Watzka - the great adventure of Fidelis' life begins. Delphine meets Eva and is enchanted. She meets Fidelis, and the ground trembles. These momentous encounters will determine the course of Delphine's life, and the trajectory of this brillant novel.
I quite enjoyed this novel. It is fairly thick, but engrossing. The characters are well developed. Overall, a great read.

Sending to Nell-Lu in Scotland, the first participant in the bookring.
This arrived today - super-fast surface mail! Thanks, newf. I'm part-way through another bookray book at the moment (The Line of Beauty) so will get onto this one later in the week. I'm looking forward to it.
Good book! I enjoyed this - I found it both readable and engrossing. The characters were interesting and sympathetic, so I wanted to know their stories. The ending was a bit weak, but the overall effect was great.
I hadn't come across Louise Erdrich before, so this was a great introduction to a new author. I see from the list at the front that she is rather prolific, so I have a lot of books to get to know...
I'll package this up to send to iiwi and take it to the Post Office in the morning. Happy reading!

An enjoyable book. That would be the end of my journal. :) Sometimes you just read a nice book, without having much more emotions about it. This was such a book for me. I liked the ending which I did not see coming.
I Pm'd florafloraflora end will send it as soon as I have an adress.

This book has arrived! I'm sorry for the delay in journaling. I've been juggling three different addresses. As it turned out this book came to the address I use least. I'm off to my profile page now to post a note about that.
Thanks to everyone who had a part in sending this book my way. It's what I'll read next.

Started reading last night. I'm looking forward to finding out more about Fidelis & Eva, but I'm not sure at all about Delphine. We shall see.
I'm sorry to say this book isn't really holding my interest. The plot is so focused on Delphine, the character who interests me the least. I've asked batty14, the next person in the ring, for her (?) address. I may keep trying to read this, but I probably won't succeed in finishing it. I still love Louise Erdrich's short stories, but I'm sorry to say that this book won't be my favorite of hers.
I mailed this off yesterday to batty14. I never did get past the death of one of the characters, and rather than keep hanging on to the book I wanted to get it out to the next eager reader. Thanks again for the ring, everyone.
Arrived today. Will put on my tbr pile. WIll get to as soon as I can.
Just finished this one this morning. I have to say it was my favorite of the summer so far and maybe of the whole year. I forgot how much I really like this author.
It is ready to be mailed off in just a few days!

Recieved in the mail about a week ago, haven't had much time online, but I am already half way done with the book. It is a very charming book so far, and I can't wait to read more.

A very enjoyable read, I found myself caught up in the lives of the characters as much as I get caught up in the lives of people I work with.
This has arrived with me. Thanks newf for sharing and Draginta for sending. Will read in the next month and pass on.
A very interesting narrative that I enjoyed thoroughly. Heartbreaking in parts, but also quite funny and poignant in others. The ending didn't quite seem to tie up all loose ends, which is perhaps the one negative point to make, but I did like the end.
This book has allowed me to tick 'E' off my 2007 Author A-Z Challenge, thanks to newf for sharing. Will pass on as soon as I have an address.

Very good. I'd not read anything by Louise Erdrich before but will be keeping my eye out for more from her now.
The story was very involving and contained the right mixture of pathos and humour. I particularly liked the characters of Delphine, Eva and Fidelis although I wish the latter could have more time spent on what he thought or felt. Having said that, the way the story was written from Delphione's perspective, it could almost have been in the first person. So perhaps knowing too much about the other characters thoughts wouldn't have worked.
Thanks for a great ring.

Arrived safely with me this morning. I've got a couple of books ahead of this one, so it might take me a few weeks before I'll finish it. It looks great though, can barely wait

This slightly tatty, well travelled book just arrived to spend some time with me. I'll read it next so that it can continue on it's journey.

Good story, well written. I like Louise Erdrich's writing - I read 'Love Medicine' a few years ago and enjoyed that too.
This book is pretty long, but for the most part you don't notice because the story is involving and the characters likeable & interesting. I lost momentum towards the end a bit, but that might just be because I've been busy doing other things.
Anyway it generally got the thumbs up from me.
Be sending it on to the next in the ring as soon as I can.

On the way to Schildkroet in Germany.
The book arrived today. It really looks like a traveller after a long journey. I cannot wait ot start reading. Thank you, gaelpixie!
I loved this book! The main characters really come alive. I was really sad when I had finished it, and I will definitely try to get more of Erdrich´s books.
On its way home to newf. Thank you again for this great book!
