Journal Entry 1 by boreal from Dunedin, Otago New Zealand on Tuesday, January 31, 2006
Found this in a 2nd hand bookshop in Christchurch just a couple of hours after we had been to the library to fill in some time and I had spied this very book on a list of the librarains top reads for 2005. The people who committed the act of revenge in 1985 thought it was perfectly executed. Twenty years on the truth is revealed, the truth about the deception that started it all and the seemingly disparate characters involved: Jasper, currently in Sydney's Long Bay Prison; psychiatrist Franca Todisco; New Zealand journalist Richard Brunel visiting Paris with society girlfriend Michaela; Lena now living on Waiheke Island with her girlfriend Scottie; and the young biographer Melody Argyle, working on a life of her intensely private subject, ex-All Black and millionaire block-buster novelist Howard Shag. What happened that connects them?

What a wonderful book, it gently pokes fun at several aspects of society -the All Blacks, naming ceremonies, woman's (that should probably be wimin's) communes amongst other things. I particularly enjoyed the womb burying ceremony -why have I never heard of them before! I am not sure how well a non New Zealander (or Australian for the matter as a lot of the book is set in Sydney) would find it as it mentions many well known people of the day, but the basic story should be able to be enjoyed by everyone. Reserved for the NZ convention.
