Really interesting, if slightly depressing in parts, story of a young woman torn between the desire for education and the lure of illicit love. Set around the time of Partition it gives a fascinating insight to another time, another culture, another country.

I thought I would enjoy this book as I usually enjoy books set in this part of the world, and find the descriptions of a different culture and way of life interesting. I just found this story, and the characters, so depressing. I struggled on with it but after 100 pages or so decided I needed something lighter to lift my spirits.

My mom, AceofHearts, passed away from breast cancer on September 17, 2013. Aside from being one of the best people I know, she was an avid reader and took immense pleasure in Bookcrossing, her book club, and reading many great books. Unfortunately she didn't get around to reading this book.
