Journal Entry 1 by Lottiotta from Swansea, Wales United Kingdom on Tuesday, January 31, 2006
Dare to read it aloud... Meggie loves books. So does her father, Mo, a bookbinder, although he has never read aloud to her since her mother mysteriously disappeared. They live quietly until a stranger knocks at their door. (Lottie: Actually he doesn't...) He has come with a warning that forces Mo to reveal an extraordinary secret - a storytelling secret that will change their lives forever. Inkheart is the thrilling new adventure from Cornelia Funke, the international bestselling children's author of The Thief Lord. It's a story within a story, where the imaginary becomes real. I really enjoyed this book! It's nice and long, 543 pages, translated from German by Anthea Bell. Despite the length, I was never bored, and it was wonderful to curl up in bed in the evenings to read. This is becoming a bookray! (It was a bookring but I don't want it back any more!) It will remain open even when I've sent it off, until the last person has it. If you'd like to join in or change any postal/order preferences, please feel free to PM me. ETA: 4th Jan '07 - Since we're at the penultimate reader and it's such a big book, I'd like for this one to stay in the UK from now on. More readers are welcome to join the list, though! Journal Entry 5 by Morgaine77 from Allschwil, Baselland Switzerland on Monday, February 27, 2006
Inkheart arrived safe and sound in Switzerland. I suppose it's Murphy's Law - or would that be the Law of Bookrings? - but today I received three Bookrings total plus a huge Bookbox... It feels a little like Birthday and Christmas in one! :-) I think I never read anything that was translated from German to English. There was no need, since German is my native tongue. It'll be really interesting to read this book and maybe compare how it was translated... Thanks for sharing lottiotta and thanks for sending Sadogs!

Journal Entry 6 by Morgaine77 from Allschwil, Baselland Switzerland on Sunday, March 19, 2006
It was an interesting experience to read a book that was translated from German to English. However, I was a little bit disappointed with "Inkheart". I had a hard time getting into the story, though I can't put my finger on why. I did like the little drawings and the book-quotes at the beginning of every chapter. That was a very nice touch. Anyways, thanks for sharing! Will pass on to Xeyra sometime next week.

Journal Entry 8 by Xeyra from Seixal, Setúbal Portugal on Friday, March 31, 2006
It has arrived. I confess this month hasn't been the best for me, reading-wise, as I am very behind on my TBR list. In fact, though I'll try to read this one as soon as possible, I cannot guarantee that I'll be able to finish it, or even start it, within the one month period we usually have, for which I apologise in advance. I will do my very best to read it in a reasonably timely fashion, because I *really* want to read this book (I missed out on it on a swap game at bookrelay, so I really want to get a shot at it in this bookring). But I'm not sure when I'll be able to start it. I have three books I am trying to read right now (one of which is almost done) plus another bookring in the waiting list. But don't worry, lottiotta; your book will be read and passed on whenever possible (and not next year, I cross my heart! *sheepish grin*). And I also want to thank Morgaine for the lovely and yummy bars of swiss chocolate she sent me. They will be a great way to ruin my diet but I can't resist chocolate. :o)

Journal Entry 9 by Xeyra from Seixal, Setúbal Portugal on Monday, April 17, 2006

I first heard about this book during a book swap game. Someone offered it on the game and since I didn't end up with it, it went on my wishlist. It seemed an interesting book and people recommended it, so when this bookring was proposed, I didn't hesitate, despite the mile-long list of bookrings I was already in. I didn't really know much about this book aside from its premise -- never heard of the author before. Well, after reading Inkheart, I'll certainly be adding some more of her titles to my wishlist, including its sequel. I really, really liked this book. The characters were refreshing and you couldn't help but like them (well, those you were supposed to like, that is -- the villains you hated, of course). It does follow a very interesting premise, which mixes reality and make-believe, and even brings in characters from much beloved stories. It's a magical tale that grips you and enchants you as you read it. But it also scares you and keeps you on the edge wanting to discover what's going to happen next, because you really don't want anything bad to happen to these characters, even though bad things do happen with frighteningly frequency. For a children's book, it's dark. The villains are bad and enjoy inflicting pain, and even if they are not entirely too smart in some cases, they still scare you. In fact, the heroes seem to be in constant danger, which adds to the whole "keeping the reader on the edge" thing: you hardly get any time to breathe in and relax before bad things happen. The characters' fear is portrayed very well, as is their courage when it's necessary, faltering as it may be. As you can see by my review, I thouroughly enjoyed reading this book. I was not disappointed with it at all, and I had somewhat high expectations towards it after hearing people gush over it. Of course, not all books are perfect and I didn't quite believe when Meggie recognised a certain someone when they could not even see their face, just because of the color of their hair and the fact that they came from Inkheart. Afterwards, it was more plausible, but at the moment Meggie first saw the woman, I don't think she had enough clues to point her in that direction, but she seemed to have immediately thought of that possibility, which we, the readers, were already aware of by that time. I have already contacted and received ragsrobin's address, so I'll be mailing this book sometime this week. Thank you so much for this bookring, lottiotta.

Arrived in the post yesterday (thanks, Xeyra!), and I just had to drop the book I was reading and start on it right away. So far it seems to be exactly the sort of book I like the best - will write another journal entry when I'm done :)

Oh, this was wonderful! I tend to agree with Xeyra that Meggie's recognising a certain someone was stretching probability a bit, but I didn't mind too much. And the end left a few loose threads, but I suppose that's necessary when there's a sequel planned *hihi* Now to get hold of Inkspell... I don't suppose you've got that available for a sequel bookring, lottiotta? Inkheart goes off to fizzfred today :)

I am so excited to read this book. And it just so happens that I have nothing to read right now. :) Thanks soooooooo much for the delicious chocolate, ragsrobin!!!! I have had a very busy and stressful week so when this arrived I dove right into the yummy treat. It took away the stress for a minute. I just wish I had time this afternoon to start the book too. It will have to wait for tonight, but the chocolate will be long gone by then. 6/5/06 Woopsie, I sent this without making a new journal entry. Sorry about that. Let's see, what did I think of this book? Humph. It was ok. The beginning dragged for me. All the teasing about what exactly was going on with Meggie's father was driving me crazy. I just wanted to get to the real story. :) I absolutely loved the aunt though. A story about her and her crazy/awesome house would be fun! I think part of the problem with my enjoyment of this book is the fact that I've read a lot of books like it recently. I liked the premise of the Thursday Next books better and I loved story within a story of The Great Good Thing much more. This book was a fun way to spend a few nights though. Thank you so much, lottiotta, for sharing it with me!!!

What a marvelous story! I thoroughly enjoyed this -- and although it was a children's book, technically, I think its another one of those that both kids and adults can enjoy. I agree with the others who found Meggie's recognition of a certain someone to be a bit unbelievable, and I did think the end came a bit abruptly. But all in all it was a quick and exciting story to read, and I wait, with baited breath, for the next installment -- and, according to the book jacket, the movie! Will send it on to the next reader as soon as I receive the info.

rec'd this in yesterday's mail...I can't wait to get started on it! I had planned on reading just the first couple of pages, and the first chapter was over before I knew it. This is next on my TBR, so I'll get to start it this week. Thanks!

What a fantastic story! The sheer size of the book could be intimidating - I'm a quick reader, but a book that thick with a plot that just chugs along would take forever to read. Not the case here. I picked this up and didn't want to put it down. I loved the quotes and the drawings...lovely. I loved the relationship Meggie shared with Mo. I liked Dustfinger even when you weren't sure whether or not you should. And Elinor was a riot. I thought the villains were a little one-dimensional, although the plot explains that away nicely. They're supposed to be that way, I guess. ;) There are moments I will not forget - the whispering of books from beneath the pillow, the aunts library - (excuse me while I wipe away the drool!) ;) Looking forward to Inkspell - and will keep an eye out for her other titles as well. Will be sending out to firrantello by end of week. Enjoy!

I think I agree with what a lot of other people have said so far. I like Mo and Meggie's relationship and I find Meggie's inclination to recognize that person a little implausible. I was thinking it was someone from another book when the hair color was first mentioned. But all in all, a quick and good read. I'll try to get it in the mail tomorrow to head on to Mom2Ty.

The father-daughter team, Meggie and Mo, love of books was very nice. Aunt Elinor was more soft-hearted than the reader was initially lead to believe. I enjoyed her spunky character. Dustfinger was likable even when he was acting sneaky. The sneakiness was due to his chronic desire to be read back into the book his character came out of not because he was a "bad guy". Although elements of the plot were a little unbelievable, it is a sci-fi/fantasy so that goes with the territory. Overall, "Inkheart" is a fun read. I PM'd macdonv who asked to be skipped. I'm trying to contact Dodau, so far without success.

I found this a bit of a slog to get into, but once I had established exactly what the issues of Dustfinger, and Meg's missing mother were, I found that I enjoyed the book more; I guess I am an impatient reader! The book is about a story, set within a story, which has the potential to be complicated for a child, remembering that this is a children's book. There is a special relationship between Meg and her father Mo, with his secret friendship with Dustfinger, and their secret world. There is also the character of Aunt Elinor and her wonderful, wonderful library of books. An enjoyable book, which is now winging its way to BaileyBird. Thanks for sharing!

What a great book to read whilst recovering! I found this book a very easy read, entertaining, and rather curious at times. I would recommend this to anyone who (like most of us here) has an absolute love of all things bookish, and many of us I am sure would recognise themselves in these pages, where there are descriptions about how important books are to the characters. The story moves along well, the characters are unusual and well rounded, and interesting idea of the story within a story works well. I shall be intrigued to read Inkspell. Thanks again for sharing Lottiotta, and apologies again for the delay. Have Pm'd Dixxy-d 3/3/08 Have heard back from Dixxy-d so will pop in post to her tmrw :0)

Got this a week or so ago, but havn't had chance to journal it till today. Thanks baileybird for sending it and lottiota for doing the ring/ray. I am hoping for a bit of a reading fest this weekend, since I am off work till Tuesday for Easter and the weather looks like it is going to be horrid here (great excuse to get comfy with a book or two!), so I may read this quickly. All your reviews are fascinating, so my appetite is definately wetted!

Journal Entry 31 by dixxy-D at Monthly Bookcrossing Meetup at The Golden Lion in York, North Yorkshire United Kingdom on Monday, May 26, 2008
Released 4 yrs ago (5/27/2008 UTC) at Monthly Bookcrossing Meetup at The Golden Lion in York, North Yorkshire United Kingdom WILD RELEASE NOTES:
RELEASE NOTES: Aagh, just realised that I didnt do a review before writing release notes, so am adding my comments here. I really enjoyed this book. I loved the premise of people moving in and out of fiction (if you liked Jasper Fforde's crazy worlds, you will probably like this, although it is a children's adventure story not a comic novel). It is quite scary in parts and rather dark (so not suitable for younger or sensitive readers, but I loved it and I would have adored it at about aged 9-13). It is a book for booklovers of course, whatever their age, so very appropriate for bookcrossing. I hope I can find it a good next home. Taking this along to the local BC meet in search of a discerning reader. It has travelled a fair bit and been enjoyed and reviewed on route, so hopefully it will find a new reader to contribute to its story ...

Journal Entry 33 by OpheliaPhillips from York, North Yorkshire United Kingdom on Sunday, July 27, 2008
Finished this book this morning; it was pretty addictive reading and I did really enjoy the story. Ok, so there are some things about it that left me thinking hmmm, could be improved, but on the other hand, this is a children's book, so it is going to be a bit different/tame simply for that reason - ie. no gore (I am gruesome!). The baddies were a little two dimensional and stereotypes straight out of any book, but again I think that's quite normal for children's books. It did feel occasionally that she was dragging out the plot a little more than necessary here and there, but that's just my opinion. What I really loved about this story is its love for books and stories. The way a story and characters can really be alive and hop from one world to another. And just the love of children's lit. and literature in general that the author so obviously has. And also a cautionary tale of why loving books TOO much can be bad for you. Perhaps a good one for us bookcrossers ;). Elinor was an interesting character and I loved her house, especially at the end when she had fairies nesting in the garden, trolls digging caves under the trees and glass people living in the attic. How much do I want to live there?! I am not sure how I am going to re release this book. But as I am person number 15 to have read it, and it has travelled so far, I feel that it can't simply sit on my shelf now. But because of it's size I don't know whether I'll be able to post it out. Anyway... will have a think about that one.

Released 3 yrs ago (8/18/2008 UTC) at Posted via Royal Mail in www.readitswapit.co.uk, A Book Swap! -- Controlled Releases WILD RELEASE NOTES:
WILD RELEASE NOTES: I don't really want to wild release this somewhere because it's had so many journallers and been on such a journey, it would be really sad for it to end up in a bin or something. So I am sending it to someone in Lancashire (UK). It might be a bit naughty of me, but I am swapping it for another book on readitswapit.co.uk - so I can definately say someone's going to read it. Whether they'll journal it, I don't know....
