I had been really looking forward to reading this book, thought it would be right up my alley. I gave it a good couple of tries, got about halfway through, did some skimming - the story just never gelled with me. The main characters weren't very likeable and I was never drawn into the story...

Sending this on to buffra today...

Mailed out. Didn't get a chance to read it -- I got swamped with life. Sorry!

Just received the the book from Buffra last week, just prior to a weeklong business trip. It was truly perfect timing!

I read this book back in the late 70s (I would have been about 20 at the time), and am enjoying reading again through the eyes of an adult.

9 out of 10

Finished last evening, and will send it off to BooksAndJava as soon as I have the address.

I enjoyed the read very much, but the ending struck me as a bit on the sad side, as compared to when I read it years ago. Having never studied classic philosophy, I can't decide which value system I better fit. Engineer/rhetorician seems to fit a big part of my life, but truth (honesty) is my highest ideal. This seems to conflict with the discussion in the book. Perhaps, I need to read it again in another 20 years or so!

Thanks so much for sharing your book with me!

After several tries and false starts, I've decided to send this book along to the next bookcrosser in the bookray. With a six-month-old at home, I need something I can read in short bursts and this is certainly not that type of book. I want to give it another try somewhere down the road (17 years? ha ha) when I can sit down and read more than a few pages at a time.

I'm sorry I kept it for so long!

Thanks - received today!
I love the inscription inside the cover, I love that this book has a history far before even us Bookcrossers adopted it!

Well, it seems I've had the same amount of luck as everyone else - I just couldn't get into this book either! I've given it a few goes, but it just doesn't grab me.
I will PM Jubby now for her address.

Ah, look what arrived today in the post along with a very generous RABCK and card from Felicia-fairy.

You are very kind lovely.

Now, after reading the journal entries, I hope that I have more luck reading this then those before me...

And what ever happened to Electra and Grant (of the scribed message in the front cover)?

I am so sorry that it has taken me so long with this book.

It is that crazy time of year, but I've only got one more week of work, and then I can give this book the attention that it deserves.

Thank you for your patience.

7 out of 10

Well! I am thinking of buying myself a little reward for finishing this book. It was a rather arduous journey.

This is a book that I had heard a lot about, and many older people (and family members) read this book in the 1970s, and remember it fondly. So, I came to this book expecting big things.

But, maybe I've read and heard so many thing like this that it lessened the impact for me. So, this book felt to me a bit like Dr Phil meets Jack Kerouac, with a bit of weird Zen philosophy thrown in.

While reading the book, I kept thinking of the message written in the front cover too. What did Grant mean by saying 'a great deal of this bok, including the tone, constitutes something basic to my interaction with him'?
I found the relationship between Chris and his father in this book rather annoying. His father being a man who rather fancied he knows all the answers to life, and rarely admits to inexperience and doubts.
Life could be rather difficult with a father like that!

Well, that is my two cents worth.

Thank you very much for sharing this book with me. It's made me want to go back and read 'On the road'.
3/1/08: I've PMed -BookHaven- who has asked to be skipped, because of work commitments, so posting on to Vunna.

Thanks again Dospescados.
