No Man's Land contains two recently rediscovered minor works by Greene. Both are spy stories. One is No Man's Land itself, the other is The Stranger's Hand.

Written just after the success of the film The Third Man, No Man's Land was intended as the basis for a film and covers some of the same territory as The Third Man both temporally (occupied Europe just as thge Cold War is starting after World War Two) and thematically (the relation between the personal and the political, love, trust and betrayal). No Man's Was never made into a film, but makes and interesting and worthwhile read with Greene demonstrating his literary abilities.

The Stranger's Hand is an incomplete story - apparently Green lost interest in it - although it was eventually made into a film after the film treatment was completed by Guy Elmes (a summary of the end of the film is included). The main character is a young boy just arrived on his own in Venice to meet his father after a separation three years. The story revolves around the disappearance of the father just after arriving but before they have actualy met. It reflects, perhaps, Greene's own loneliness/alienation as a child. Certainly, for me, this was the most interesting aspect in an otherwise less than compelling story.
